Wanted: recommendation for fast, simple phone to degoogle

Hey eOSians

I’m a long term eOS user but no tech expert and want to add another eOS device to use as a 5G hotspot in place of broadband. The device will be optimally placed in my home for reception (or taken on the road), generally left on charge, possibly tethered to a dedicated router and sometimes used directly as a hotspot.

Anyone have a suggestions of a device that is secure, cheap (second hand), supported by eOS and stable, has fast communications but can have very poor cameras, screen, speakers, battery etc.

I’m thinking that mid range devices might fit the bill and avoiding Pixel 6* and 8* ranges due to the rollback fiasco. I’m even considering ones with faulty screens to keep the price down.

Thanks!

Try Fairphone. Go for a refurbished Fairphone 3 or 4. Plenty of spareparts and many years of support.

This will potentially involve many options.

The Smartphone Selector has a useful Search option

I have been quite happy with the “lower to mid range” Motorola. One might search say, 2021, might be near or at end of life for manufacturer support so maybe low priced if not Grade A but offer /e/OS at a15.

Interesting. I vowed to “never have another Motorola” after my previous one couldn’t select a contact from the text message component. You had to separately know the number by heart or write it down then type it in. The SIM was the size of an entire credit card though, so perhaps enough time has lapsed and I can let that go…
