Whatsapp history to save to linux laptop

I gave up on transfering Whatsapp history (from android to e/os). I put in hours and it didn’t work.
Can someone give a suggestion how to get my backup which I have on my laptop (the backup made to google drive on my old android phone) to a readable form on my laptop? How do I convert this? I see several paid and dicey looking software tools and I have no clue which tool would work. I’m stuck.

Thought: what if. What if I installed Google Drive for a few minutes, download the backup from whatsapp and restore it from Google Drive. Thereafter I deinstall Google Drive. Would that help? And if so how to backup later on?

Do you have a regular Android device on which to reinstate WhatsApp? Or perhaps you still have the old phone?

Then a File Manager or adb can explore the Android directory for all the content and perhaps extract with adb pull (but you probably knew this).

… if it is anything like Telegram the images might be found in the equivalent of

Hi @aibd thanks for your response. I do have my old phone still and I tried the following:

  1. the qr-code scan and go approach (from phone A to B) - cannot connect phones
  2. [HOWTO] Transfer WhatsApp messages from Google Android to /e/ (backup and restore)
1 > backup your data from old device on pc >> done
    2 > prepare new device >> done
3 > restore backup >> not successful due to fact that I wasn’t able to determine WA folder on E/OS phone.

Another solution I came across was the following. However, it looks complex which provides a fair chance I will not be successful in completing it correctly.

as to 1) you say this article fails for you?

“/sdcard” in that guide is just the base directory of your user - where folders like Documents, DCIM, Downloads reside. At the same level, place the WhatsApp folder before first WhatsApp startup on the device. If it’s already installed, remove, install + start again when the WhatsApp folder is placed in the filesystem
