When is the anti-rollback protection triggered?

ok. so. long story short: i need to temporarily go back to stock android on my fairphone 5; however, stock android is at a higher security patch.

if i reinstall e/os afterwards but do not relock the bootloader, will that still brick my phone? i have been told both that it will, and that it won’t, at different points in time, and would like confirmation before doing something i might regret

what matter is not the ASU in the system you use (when bootloader unlocked)

what matter are the ASU in the installed system at time of the unlock step against the ASU in the installed system at time of the relock step.
