Work profile / Shelter / sand boxing - any updates?

I’m trying to basically clone an app, and searches have turned up:

OS documentation says that Shelter breaks the Advanced Privacy/Fake My Location feature. (So don’t use it, basically.) - Advanced Privacy

Post from earlier this year seems to have no (widely replicable) solution - Sandboxing, work profile, multiple users, dual apps ... Differences and howto? with a link to an unsolved related post

Someone mentioned earlier this year (for an earlier /e/OS version update, if that makes a difference) that a different launcher works for them, though? - Feedback for v3.4 - #108 by Bene

What’s the current status with Shelter and the work profile? Is Bliss Launcher still unable to handle this? Is the solution using a different launcher or has that changed since version updates?

So my problem back then was, that the double tap to open the camera does not open the default camera app, but the other camera app. This is FP6 specific and still the case for me.

Regarding Shelter on /e/OS: it basically works for most use cases. What does not work as expected:

  • Bliss Laucher shows works apps with an icon in the corner. Works, but I don’t like it. That’s why I have another launcher with two tabs (private and work).
  • AdvancedPrivacy: didn’t know about that one, can not say more
  • Some apps don’t work in the work profile. 2 examples from my tests: Zoom somehow needs to be in the private one, as the authentication flow (login via browser) at one point leaves the work profile (and then errors out). And I could not get an S/MIME cert into Fairmail in work profile, as I only could install the cert into the private store.

Thank you! Just curious when you say default camera app, which one are you referring to? The Fairphone one (green camera app icon)? Or the /e/OS fork of Open Camera (gray app icon with large black lens (with white border) and a red dot in the top right corner)? I remember having a similar issue I think with the camera shortcut in lock screen but unfortunately I don’t remember how that was resolved. I do get “serious camera error” sometimes when using the shortcut and unblocking the camera access, though. I hope that gets resolved for you!

  • I did decide to try my hand at Insular instead and found the same about how Bliss Launcher shows the work apps with the icon in the corner.
  • Yea, not sure either here lol. I don’t use the Fake My Location feature anyway and I’m hoping that’s the only one affected. (I do use the Block Trackers feature, that’s it. Hide My IP I don’t use because I have a VPN anyway.)

Hello,

I have installed shelter and it seems that location spoofing is still working perfectly well at least in the main profile.

Maybe the issue discribed in the doc was solved without the doc having been updated.

Thank you! I’m hoping that that’s the case. There’s no date in the documentation (that I saw) indicating when it was last updated, and then various info in the forum was conflicting. Appreciate your shared experience!

I have the Fairphone camera set as default, but the Open Camera fork opens on double tap. As you have resolved some of your problems with that, I will again go through the settings. Maybe this time it works.
