Nice find. I managed it by powering off, using power and volume down to reach the fastboot screen, selecting Recovery mode, then rebooting from Recovery. I then found a much easier way of installing manually over on xda. They were discussing a LineageOS install but it works for e/OS. I’ll post it in the other section mentioned here and ask if there is any risk given steps are skipped.
