Week 24, 2022 : Development and Testing Updates

Builds and Releases

v1.0

Status: :green_circle: Released

  • v1.0 released on 31 May, 2022
  • Release code name was Alicante
  • Release notes
  • Milestone details here

v1.0 build released on

  • R
  • Q

v1.0 was not released on

  • Pie
  • Oreo
  • Nougat

:disappointed: For Pie, Oreo and Nougat the official /e/OS support draws to a close.

Reasons for dropping official support are:

  • newly released applications like App Lounge, Advanced privacy code has not been customized for these OS versions.
  • lack of dedicated ROM Maintainers
  • no support upstream (Lineage dropped support for Pie sometime back)
  • device trees will continue to exist in the Gitlab and users with build skills can create custom ROMs on these builds
  • Security patches and vendor patches for the Pie, Oreo and Nougat code will be updated based on availability. Google stops security patches for OS after some time. Then it depends on developers from various communities to backport the patches.

GSI

  • GSI builds on v1.0 are available here
    • Sources of last GSI release can be viewed here

OTA OS upgrades planned

Status: :green_circle: To be released / planned

  • Samsung s7 / s7 edge OTA OS upgrade on v1.0 code
    • Released
    • The builds are being released for a couple of hours on a daily basis. This is to check in case any user has issues with the upgrade builds. While we have tested these builds, we are being cautious with our releases. These releases will resume on Monday 13 June.
    • The next stage in the release process for the S7/s7+ will be to keep the builds active the whole day, instead of only a few hours as at present.
    • Note : The older OS builds will not be visible on these devices as the builds would on Nougat or Oreo and can confuse some users.

Update 15 June An issue has been reported while upgrading Signal app on the s7 /s7+ Please check this thread for details

Upcoming OS OTA upgrades

  • Samsung s8 /s8+
    • ETA not available
  • FP3
    • ETA not available

 OTA OS upgrade means the upgrade from /e/OS Nougat or Oreo to /e/OS Q will be delivered Over the Air (OTA). The OTA upgrade will be available on official builds only. Users who have unofficial or custom builds will not get the notification to install the upgrade build. They will have to manually download and flash the Q builds once they are released.

Guidelines for ROM Builders - Unofficial and Custom

  • Docker image was updated recently
  • If you use Docker for your builds, upgrade to this Docker build before running your custom-builds.
  • Those building using traditional repo sync method refer android_prebuilts_prebuiltapks_lfs
    • You will have to install git-lfs (sudo apt-get install git-lfs)
    • After completing a repo sync, you will have to run repo forall -c 'git lfs pull'

Since /e/ shockingly dropped support for 3 Android Generations at once i was wondering about the plans to upgrade devices to Q/R? Which devices can we expect to be updated? And when…

A list of devices which were upgraded was shared here Except for surya all the rest have been upgraded. You can find the builds here.

Thanks for your reply and the list of upgraded devices. Will there be more devices upgraded? I own a Samsung S2 Tablet and still only Pie is available for it…

Yes, more devices will be upgraded. The easiest upgrade for us are devices which are already on R or S builds with Lineage. Popular requests from users can also get upgrades.
