I am 72 years old (73 in Nov. 2020) and retired lecturer. My academic training an my doctorate were in pure mathematics. My first “real” job was as a lecturer in mathematics. However I was soon recruited into the newly formed computing department as I was one of the few members of staff who had actually used a computer.

If you are wondering about the profile picture. I was married to a Chinese journalist for over a quarter of a century. It translates as “Never forget the 4th of June” and is a reference to the Tian An Men massacre of 1989, an event I am incapable of forgetting.
In the early 80’s the ideas behind the notion of “Free Software” (approximately what people now call “Open Source”) even though their formulation in their formulation in the GPL came a few years later. I founded a small company to provide software on that basis both to users of the many small home computers that existed then and to small companies. I failed abysmally. I had thought that all memory of the company had disappeared until I fortuitously came across this link https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/QL-SPELLING-TUTOR-CASE-INLAY-ONLY-SINCLAIR-QL-198-ESCAPE-SOFTWARE/183918155230

I have always been politically active and am an active member of the Green Party. A Fairphone running /e/ ticks nearly all the ethical boxes as far as I can see (there is always room for improvement) with the notable very important one of giving me complete control by allowing me to easily root it and still be able to use it normally e.g. being able to update it seamlessly and not have to go through some arcane procedure involving Magisk and an unlocked bootloader. I hope this will be addressed some time.
