Actual location being used despite having everything turned off

Hi everyone!
I’ve been using /e/ since the start of this year. Right now i’m on the current version: /e/OS 2.3-s-20240816426374-stable-star2lte on an Galaxy S9+.

Today i’ve noticed something that is unacceptable to me and i would really like to know why this is and how to solve it. Maybe someone can help me.

Today i’ve looked up the opening hours of a store nearby on Brave Browser with Brave Search. I’ve searched for name of the store + my towns name. In the search results there’s an OpenStreetMap window that shows all the different locations of these stores on the map. Under the map there are all the stores and their adresses listed.
Now here’s the fun part:
It showed the exact distance from me to every single one of the stores.
And that’s a bit odd because:
Location data is turned off on my phone. Since day one. I don’t use it, i don’t need it.
Location use in my browsers is turned off / blocked (Brave and the pre installed one).
Advanced Privacys “Fake Geolocation” is activated.
And i use a VPN.

So can someone please tell me how tf this is possible?
I’ve never noticed this before, but i’m also not looking stuff like this up very often.
This never happened on Android. I can clearly remember that these distances were always wrong. And that’s how it should be. At least for me.

I was curious after that and started the pre installed “Maps” for the first time. Location data off, only mobile data active (+ VPN active). I didn’t read any of the “first steps” stuff, or whatever that was, just closed the app and opened it again. Just to see what location it shows initially. And who would’ve thought… the first thing it shows on the map is my hometown. Not a pin on my exact location, but my town. According to Advanced Privacy it should’ve been somewhere in Spain (which is not where i’m from obviously). And like i said, i haven’t used this app before.

Anyone got any ideas why this is or what i can do?

There are a few other problems i have with /e/ right now, but by far not as severe as the one stated above. I’m including them in this post, because maybe it’s connected.
Maybe one of the last updates messed something up.

Since the last couple of updates i’ve got following problems:
I’m using the original BlissLauncher. When i’m scrolling through my apps and i’m not on the home screen and want to return to the home screen by pressing the home button, it doesn’t return to it. The screen jerks in the direction of the home screen for a brief moment, but then doesn’t go there. If i spam the home button it works.
(The way i organized my apps resulted in 5 sites to the right of the home screen + Home screen itself + the widgets site (to the left). So 7 in total. (just In case this info is helpful))

So it feels a bit glitchy at the moment because of that. Was hoping an update would fix it, but the last two haven’t.

The other problem has to do with internet connection.
I don’t want to be connected all the time, so i only turn on Wi-Fi or mobile data when i need it. Since an update, can’t remember which one exactly, there was a change in the pull down menu for connecting. Now the default is the “Internet” button which opens up a menu and lets you choose between Wi-Fi and mobile. And i don’t like that. I want a one click solution, like it was before. Not an extra menu which i have to open up now just to select which connection i want. So i organized it like it was before, because there’s the option to do that. Wi-Fi and mobile data button seperately next to each other and the Internet menu removed from the pull down menu.
Now here’s the problem with that:
When i activate Wi-Fi, it doesn’t connect 8 out of 10 times. No matter where i’m standing. Next to my router or anywhere else. So i have to long press
Wi-Fi to open up the unwanted “Internet menu” for it to connect. Connects almost immediately then. So this new menu has basically become essential now because the old method is more than unreliable.

Honestly i was amazed that the new method has become the default now, regardless of my connecting problem. Opening a menu to activate your preferred connection seems counterintuitive to me. Well, that’s my opinion. But as long as the old, sepearate button method is available, i think it should also be usable, which it isn’t at the moment.

All in all the last few updates unfortunately made my experience with /e/ a bit worse. None of the problems occured when i first installed it. Only the location problem could’ve been there from the start and i just haven’t noticed it, but i genuinely doubt it.

I know, quite a lot at once, but that’s basically all of my complaints. I was generally pleased with /e/ so far, but the location thing is an absolute no go.
I really appreciate anyone reading this and trying to help me with my problem!

Thanks in advance!

Please post how the following settings are set for you …

  • Settings - System - microG - Location - Wi-Fi location - Request from Mozilla
  • Settings - System - microG - Location - Wi-Fi location - Request from Hotspot
  • Settings - System - microG - Location - Wi-Fi location - Remember from GPS
  • Settings - System - microG - Location - Mobile network location - Request from Mozilla
  • Settings - System - microG - Location - Mobile network location - Remember from GPS
  • Settings - System - microG - Location - Location server - Use /e/OS’s location system

Perhaps there’s something to see, for instance the last setting is fairly new.

The default combined Internet toggle in the quick settings was introduced in the base for all Android 12 (S) back then, apparently Google liked it that way. You can get seperate toggles back by editing the quick settings menu …

Thanks for your reply!

To be honest, i have disabled everything microG related. I know it says some things might not function as intended anymore, but the few Apps i actually use regularly all worked fine without it. Never had problems with any app.
Only problems i had were system based, which i didn’t contribute to microG being disabled, because these problems didn’t occure immediately after disabling. Everything was fine until i updated the OS. Therefore i thought it has something to do with the update. I’m not an expert in this, as you can probably tell.

Like i stated in my first post, those problems were the Home button not working as intended and i had problems connecting to Wi-Fi.

So because of your reply i enabled microG again, just to be able to see the settings.

Now the Home Button is working as intended again.
And Wi-Fi also connects immediately.

So these problems were clearly because of microG being disabled.

But now to the important part.

Everything is enabled except:

Settings - System - microG - Location - Wi-Fi location - Request from Hotspot

So do i have to keep microG enabled now and just disable all these options, in order to block location data showing up in my browser?

Does disabling microG really make Advanced Privacy and a VPN kind of useless?
Because there’s absolutely no indication that nothing’s working as intended. Disabling microG is at my own risk and i was warned about that, i know. But like i said, everything at least seemed to work fine, and everything was set the way i wanted it. Advanced Privacys Fake Geoloccation, Location blocking system wise and in browser, plus a VPN - and all that became irrelevant just because microG was disabled?

Shouldn’t Brave Browser and Proton VPN actually work fine without microG / Google Services? Is Advanced Privacy the problem? Or is /e/ as a whole not working properly without microG and that can result in such problems?

I know, /e/ comes with microG and if i don’t want that, i should probably look for something else. I’m aware of that. But i figured if i don’t need any Google Services, why not disable them all then. Seems not to be that easy i guess.

Thanks in advance for any reply!

I don’t know … but you seem to be motivated and in a position to simply try and find out  .

Note also the declared “side effect” of Advanced Privacy with regard to VPN.

Well, guess i keep experimenting then. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction with microG.

So i’ve read the link you’ve posted and to my understanding, using a VPN parallel to Advanced Privacy shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve only enabled “Block App Trackers” and “Fake Geolocation”.
“Hide IP Adress” is disabled because that’s what my VPN is for.
So there shouldn’t be any “side effects”, as far as i know. But as i said, i’m absolutely not an expert, so anyone please correct me if i’m wrong.

Nonetheless, thanks for the link.

My best guess to what created the problems is:
Disabling microG and then updating /e/.
Doesn’t seem to be very advisable :face_with_diagonal_mouth:
