Android Auto Speech recognition

Hi! I’m currently using Android Auto on e/OS and it works great. I know that in the context of e/OS, it might sound counter-intuitive, but I’d really like to be able to use Google’s voice recognition, so that I can control Android Auto using speech. Currently, that doesn’t work. I get a notification that speech recognition is unavailable, when I push the button. I have installed the Google Speech Recognition & Synthesis app. I am using e/OS 2.5 (stable) on Fairphone 5. Any tips or ideas? Thanks in advance!

As a corollary to the original post, I would really like to know if some Android compatible speech recognition subsystem — from Google or anyone else — could be employed without sending raw, processed, or statistically- or AI-extracted speech data to any outside party.

This didn’t use to be the case 1-2 years ago, but Google now requires to be signed in to use their TTS and Google Assistant features. If you sign in to microG with a Google Account, it will all work, but obviously then all your Google App activity on the phone is no longer anonymous, and tracked against that Google Account.

That makes sense and is very clear. Thanks very much! I’ll take some time to consider whether the convenience is worth the downside.

Being logged into microG is also a lot less exposing than a normal Google Phone. With microG it isn’t sharing your location or app usage constantly to Google. Only when you use a Google App is information shared through usage in that app. For instance, if you are logged in with your Google Account in microG and use Google Maps, your location will be shared to Google through Maps. If you do a search in the GMail app, that will be recorded. If you open the assistant and ask a question, that will be recorded.

What I don’t know is if you launch Android Auto, will Google Maps have access to your location the entire trip while Android Auto is running. With aa4mg, I was able to use “dummy” apps for Maps to get Android Auto to work. I tried this with the /e/OS implementation but it didn’t appear to work, so you will have the real Google Maps that could reveal your location.
