Audio problems with Teracube 2e

I have a Teracube 2e (emerald) that I installed /e/OS 3.7 on a few months ago, intending to give it to my teen who wants to de-Google. (I’m using a Moto X4 that I put /e/ on at the same time.). The T2e previously had a custom version of LineageOS-A14 that had been provided by the Teracube developers and audio worked fine.

Now I can’t get the internal mic to work on the T2e. (A wired headset mic does work.) The stock Sound Recorder app shows no waveform when I speak into it, and while Mic Test Pro shows the internal mic as being active, it doesn’t take in sounds.

The internal speaker sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. Bluetooth audio seems to work although I only have speakers, not a mic, to test with.

Turning mic access off and on hasn’t helped. I’ve done a factory reset, and upgraded to /e/ 4.0 and 4.1 to no effect. Perhaps there’s something wrong with the headphone jack?

Does anyone have a similar experience or ideas on what I could try?
Thanks
John

[edited just after posting to reflect that a wired headset mic does actually work]

Regain your privacy! Adopt /e/OS the deGoogled mobile OS and online services

I haven’t anything useful to help you debug, unfortunately, but I can say that everything has worked (and is still working) fine with my emerald for all versions of /e/OS including 3.7 and 4.1 so it’s a priori not an intrinsic ROM issue

“[…]and while Mic Test Pro shows the internal mic as being active, it doesn’t take in sounds.”

So, the test should fail at the end of the day if nothing recorded, but it says I assume, from the system point of view the mic active.

Also, did You say external, earphones mic worked?

I would think the mic in the handset is physically kaput…

Is there only one? Is ‘loudspeaker’ option using the same one?

I am asking as my RAZR2022 had 3 mics and Huawei P30 pro could use speaker as a backup one.

You may need to try and replace the mic, as you might be wasting your time on the software side?

There is an app Fairphone Checkup might be useful

JandR has a Teracube phone, will that help with their handset aibd?

Yes it will work on all phones, even if every single feature is not shared by all phones.

One can ckeck the blurb before download or I can copy it …

This is a fork of the Fairphone 2 checkup app that has been modified in
order to work on other devices as well.

Probably better to test before replacement parts.

Thank You, good to know! :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for your tips, all. I figured it out: at about the same time that I installed /e/, I also replaced the USB board (per [ Advanced ] How to replace the USB-C Board - Teracube 2e - Teracube Community ) since the original USB port wouldn’t reliably keep a cable inserted. What I didn’t realize until today (and wasn’t mentioned in that post) is that the mic is mounted on the USB board, and the “charging cable” mentioned in that post is also the “microphone cable”.

Apparently I had reseated the “charging” ribbon cable so that the phone would charge, but the mic wouldn’t connect. After several attempts today I got the cable seated so that both the charging and the mic worked. Hopefully it stays seated with regular use of the phone.

For what it’s worth I did install Fairphone Checkup and it detects a primary mic as well as a secondary mic that it says is for reducing ambient noise, but no other usable mic.

Thanks again everyone!
