Background data use shown for removed apps

On my device, under data usage, I have an entry both for wifi and mobile use for apps and users that have been removed.

All of this data use is shown as background data, although most of my apps are allowed to only use foreground data. I have removed/reinstalled some apps recently, so it’s not completely unexpected to have that entry, however I am not sure whether the reinstalled apps shouldn’t then aggregate under the same installed app, and also it’s more data than I would have thought from these apps off the top of my head.

So it’s a bit weird.

Hence:

  • Does anyone else see something similar?
  • Is it possible that previous versions of updated and/or re-installed apps show here?
  • Is is it possible that previous system components show here after an update?
  • Is it possible that foreground/background counting is off here (running traffic through Rethink VPN, not sure that makes a difference)

I can now answer item 4 - data usage for an app that had been installed is counted towards background data in the “apps and users that have been removed” in its entirety.

Test: Remove a browser app from phone that mainly had foreground data usage of around 70 Mb

Result: Background data usage for apps that have been removed is increased by around 70 Mb, foreground data use still 0.
