"Backup error: a device backup failed to run" and recovery code loop

I have had the above error in my notifications for a few months, not sure exactly when it started. It has a “Fix” link, when I click on that I am presented with a 12 part recovery code that I have to write down and then re-enter. Problem is that on entering the code I am dropped back into the same sequence but with a new code. This goes on forever.

So I don’t know what’s wrong with my backup and at this point I’m less concerned about that. I want to get out of this verification loop.

Seedvault has 12 item recovery code, it can be found at Settings > System > Backup.

Did you perhaps set Seedvault to automatic or regular backup to an “external” plug in USB device which is not accessible? or perhaps an SD card which is now out of space? Just first thoughts why it might be impossible.

No, I didn’t. Settings > System > Backup drops me into the same loop as described above. Different 12 part code every time so I can never get out of the cycle.

as i remember there is a set of 12 words that you have to hit in the same order than the first time to restore…

That is exactly what I am doing. But then I get dropped back at the same screen with a new set of 12 words, rather than going on to the next stage post-verification. It is an endless loop.

Did you intentionally set up Backup? Do you know where the backup, if ever successful (you do not say) is stored ?

This will probably cease your existing backup plan, you might try

Settings > Apps > Show all … apps > top right 3 dot menu > Show system > Seedvault Storage > Clear data

Yes, I had it set up and it was working for a while.

Just tried clearing data. Small change in behaviour: now when I go into the backup settings menu and verify the 12 part code, I get dropped back at the backup settings menu rather than straight back to the verification. But it’s still a permanent loop as I keep getting new verification codes and never get to actual backup settings.

I was backing up to Murena nextcloud. Thanks for the Reddit link, that’s exactly my issue. Good to know that seedvault can be removed via ADB, shame that it’s necessary.

So, due to the outage, the backup is likely currently “impossible”.

So perhaps you can go to Settings > Apps etc again and simply disable all notifications.

The “disable the app” solution seems less that ideal. If you wished to maintain a backup I guess somehow you would be best to detach yourself from this backup path for the time being.

That makes sense, thanks.

I wonder if Settings > Apps etc > Seedvault > Force stop would cancel the backup ?

I would restart the phone then see if you get control of Seedvault again.

I guess your backup on the cloud will be quite dated by now.
