Hi Team,
I hope my post is in the right category? Otherwise, let me know.
I would like to share my experience with my OnePlus 9 Pro. First, I really enjoy using e/OS. I’m very happy to be disconnected from Google world.
Second, I have an issue with the battery draining. In standby mode the battery is not draining at all. Unfortunately, when I use my cell, it’s getting hot and the battery melts away overnight.
Few other info to understand the context. The battery is brand new (original OEM), all the apps (without any games) were already on my former G phone (OP Nord 2) without any battery issue. Last point, I always close all the apps once I’ve finished.
Do you have any explanation and advice to save the battery while I use my phone and keep the temperature cool?
Thanks in advance for your help.

It would be good to have an overview of the most accu consuming apps. You can see this in the Settings under Accu and then the first entry in the list. The most representative moment is when the accu is almost empty.
You should then clean the cache of these top apps. This has been a reason in many cases.
What happens when you are on wifi?

That’s definitely abnormal, the phone should not get noticeably warm during typical usage like messaging and videos. Though phones can heat up quite a bit if you’re doing something CPU/GPU intensive like playing 3D games. In that case power consumption is high so it would be normal for the battery to drain quickly. Another situation where phones can normally heat up quite a bit is during wireless charging.
If the phone is powered down completely, the battery should not drain at all, at most 1% a week. In standby where the phone is on with a blank screen, 1% an hour is considered normal. Personally my phone drains 1% every 2 hours with the radios off, a little under 1% an hour with the radios on.
There’s two considerations and two courses of action, one for screen on and one for on and idle with screen off. You’re not making it clear to me where you have the problem. It sounds like you’re seeing excessive battery drain only with screen on.
The most likely cause of that is an errant app that’s over-loading the CPU. First thing to do is reboot the phone. Check battery consumption for apps under Battery in settings to find the offender. Clear cache and storage for the offending app. If that fails to solve the problem disable the app or remove and re-install the app.
If no errant apps are apparent you may need to resort to a factory reset. If that still doesn’t fix it, the problem may be due to a hardware issue.

Thank you both for your replies.
For information my wifi is always off. What is odd to me is, I saw 15min video through NewPipe and the phone was not hot at all. On the other hand some PWA like Instagram is making the phone hot.
Based on battery utilisation in settings, the last 2 days, the biggest consumptions are, WhatsApp with 8%, then Fennec with 5% and Thunderbird 4% like Blissweather or phone.
I already clear the cache without significant change.
To me the phone is gathering and use too much power to run apps with the consequence of draining the battery and make the phone warmer. To make an example, I don’t need a Ferrari to drive in a traffic jam.
Thanks
If you have battery drain while you have network connection and no battery drain when the network is off it’s also to assume that this is related to data sending. Especially sending over a mobile network needs a lot of energy because the sending power to the next antenna must be much bigger (1km) than to the next wifi router (5m).
Try to find out which apps cause the most data traffic. If you don’t have a better idea try Glasswire for that. The apps you mention (Instagram, WhatsApp) are suspicious.
That’s not unusual for app consumption. It there was a particular app over-loading the battery, you’d see a number much higher than 8%. If you click on the hamburger menu in the list of apps you can view system apps as well. Could be something you’re not seeing in the regular user app list.
Otherwise if it’s not related to any apps you could try shutting off mobile data to see if it’s related to that. The modem can drain the battery quite a bit faster than normal due to low signal strength. Try shutting off 5G. It can be a real battery hog. On my phones I actually leave it off full time. 5G is not always faster the 4G LTE especially when the signal is not strong. I don’t think it’s worth the battery drain to leave it on.
Thanks for your advices.
So far and after installing Glasswire, no major problem concerning data traffic. @irrlicht I use Instagram through PWA to avoid any over data consumption.
I don’t think the mobile network is related to my issue.
The other example I have is seeking some pics in my galery. It took me over 5 mins to find what I was looking for and the phone was very hot.
Still, It seems the processor is using 100% of his power to run all sorts of apps.
Anything to control the firepower of the processor I would say?
Some Gallery apps use maximum brightness, 100%. This made my accu getting hot one day. Check this, most Gallery apps have such an option in their settings. And also that the screen remains on all the time until you close it. This can also be an option in camera apps.
On maximum brightness the screen can use more power than the SoC. If it’s on full bright and you’re doing anything processor intensive at all, then yes the phone could drain the battery fast and get warm. Though on my phones, maximum screen brightness is blinding in low ambient light. Other than direct sunlight I would notice that pretty quick.
The standard gallery provided by e/OS do not offer the option of brightness control.
So your advice would be to decrease the brightness of my screen without using the automatic brightness control? I’ll do and will try.
Thanks again.
