I wonder how much energy one would really safe compared to simply dimming display brightness.
May change from having “classic” LED or oLED.
I agree, the intensity of light might be a better way to save energy, intuitively.

I just stumbled across this, you may check whether this option is available in your phone…
go to system settings → Display → Live Display → enable reading mode (if available) - now, as long as the mode is active the display will show no colors but b+w
