Cannot install TWRP over /e recovery

Hi

Just upgraded to A15 on Motorola G7. This of course has left me with /e recovery. I need to reinstall Twrp.

I had hoped to boot Twrp from the bootloader using its img file. It boots, but freezes at the opening screen. I have also attempted to flash it without results. The bootloader remains unlocked.

Flashing gives:

./fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.5.2_10-0-river.img
(bootloader) is-userspace: not found
(bootloader) is-logical:recovery: not found
(bootloader) is-logical:recovery: not found
(bootloader) is-logical:recovery: not found
Warning: skip copying recovery image avb footer (recovery partition size: 0, recovery image size: 33540096).
Sending ‘recovery’ (32754 KB) OKAY [ 0.751s]
Writing ‘recovery’ (bootloader) Invalid partition name recovery
FAILED (remote: ‘’)
fastboot: error: Command failed

Can anyone help please?

Cliff

This is not supposed to work according to https://twrp.me/motorola/motorolamotog7.html, as on this device (and others) TWRP needs to embed itself into the boot partition instead of getting flashed to a recovery partition.

So you were right in first trying to boot the image. I don’t know why it would freeze for you, I don’t have the device, but that seems the way to go.

Yep correct but I think I may have got the command wrong. Can’t try it now no laptop. Will get back

Thanks

Nah. I got it right. ./fastboot boot twrp.img.

I get a frozen screen

i have the same issue, i can’t understand why.

on my Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE Advanced Cat4 [GT-I9506]
running e-3.2-t-20251110-UNOFFICIAL-ks01lte.zip,
i am no more able to install TWRP,

i tried the old well known TWRP 3.3.1 and latest TWRP 3.5.2
i tried using Heimdall (linux), also Odin3 (windows) and Odin4 (linux)

it hangs on

when the “recovery-e” can be reinstalled…

That’s exactly what I get. Still digging at present but not easy when using /e

I’ve done it now and need help.
Tried to install TWRP into boot with ./fastboot flash boot twrp.img.

However, phone boots to a frozen start screen of twrp(as above) and nothing else. I can still get to the bootloader but when I restart it’s back to a frozen twrp screen

I’ve tried to reinstall the /e recovery with ./fastboot flash recovery recovery-e-3.7.3-a15-20260507618656-community-river.img but this gives errors.

Any ideas from here?

Cliff

according to Install /e/OS on a Motorola Moto G7 - “river”

Flash a recovery image onto your device

 fastboot flash boot recoveryfilename.img

so in your case :

./fastboot flash boot recovery-e-3.7.3-a15-20260507618656-community-river.img

Thanks for that Piero, it worked

I’d forgotten or lost those instructions. I might leave this whole thing now before more senior moments!

If anyone does crack this TWRP issue above please let us know

Cliff

Right. Just booted TWRP in all its glory using twrp-3.5.0_9-0-river.img. An older version but it’s fine on Motorola G7 A15.

Nope. It don’t work. The twrp-3.5.0_9-0-river.img boots okay and opens, and one can then install TWRP(same version) but then that freezes. I installed the latest TWRP for the Motorola 3.5.2_10 and this freezes as well. So its back to /e recovery.

This must be A15. Apparently security has been tightened. But this is a /e OS? Dunno

I considered quoting this link earlier … Why doesn't my device have the latest updates? Why was my device's latest update removed from the site? but actually the link was updated yesterday. Its contents have changed numerous times since TWRP 3.7 was built for a12. The written contents will ofc avoid disrespect of their devs, volunteers and builders.

Ofc older devices tend to be happy with older TWRP but this does not always extend to newer Android versions.
