Cannot send images via SMS

I cannot send images via SMS. I used to be able to SMS images on this phone, but something changed earlier this year, and now none of them go through. Every time I send an SMS with a photo, it says “Failed to send” just below the photo. When I click “Tap to try again” it shows “sending” for a fraction of a second, and then I get the error again. I have not changed carrier or any other settings that I’m aware of. I don’t know how to begin to troubleshoot this.

I once had that problem; it turned out to be related to, apparently, the DNS lookup service I had intentionally set (Quad9). When I reverted to the mobile network’s default, MMS started working again.

I haven’t tried other DNS lookup services, so I don’t know if the problem was related to Quad9 specifically, or just any provider other than the network’s default.

Thanks for the suggestion. “Private DNS” was set to automatic. I turned it to “off”, and that didn’t make any difference, unfortunately.

I’m gonna do the dumb dude, but it is the first thing to do in this case : have you turned your mobile data on. Might sound obvious, but some people complain about not beng able to send mms without having their data on…

That’s not dumb. That’s a good suggestion, thanks! But yes, mobile data is turned on.

Similar problem here: Sometimes they go through, sometimes not. I also cannot receive MMS:s, except sometimes, from random people it seems – have tested it with several friends on different phones. From family member’s /e/ OS phone, both SMS and MMS seem to work, but from others it often does not. This seems to be independent of their phones being Apples or other Androids.
I have talked to my carrier service company (Telia Sweden) several times to make sure the settings were correct, and it got better, but then worse again, especially after the latest /e/OS update. Starting to think the OS is involved after all.
Today I even tried installing Replify to see if that would help, since they support RCS, but that does not even work for normal text messages on my phone (keeps saying “Sending…” so far for about 13 minutes).

I have since installed a different messaging application (Fossify). With Fossify, I can text photos (MMS) to individuals successfully, but when I try to MMS to a group, I get no error, but no recipients get any texts.

Also, I am using AT&T prepaid service in the US (so it’s probably not carrier related).

So, right now, I suspect there’s a problem with how e/os deals with MMS. I don’t really know what to try next.

Maybe consider verificating your access point parameters. It’s in Settings>network>SIM>Access Point name

There you can check the advanced settings for your SMS, calls and MMS. Maybe compare with the one AT&T wants you to use. For example, if you don’t have mms in the APN type of the access point you’re using, you’ll never be able to send pictures, as they use MMS protocol and not SMS.

Been there, done that actually five times. My carrier’s support people have gone through them all.

Thanks, the fossify version at least sent a text message, contrary to Replify. Crossing fingers.
Edit: The Fossify Messages also returned working scheduled messages, phew! Love that feature, a pity the normal message app had a bug there.

I hit “reset to APN default”, and that didn’t solve the problem.

I found the APN settings that my carrier requires, and I created a new APN with that exact info, matching even the case of each field, and removing data from fields where it was supposed to be empty. (Program Data Settings for Your Device - AT&T Wireless Customer Support).

That seems to have solved the problem for now with Message, although things are strange in that some messages continually say “sending…”.

Fossify, however, still cannot send group texts via MMS after I made the new APN.

Considering this has been an intermittent problem for a long time, I’m going to hold off on suggesting that my problem is fixed for now.

Nope, tweaking the apn solved the problem temporarily, but I, again, cannot send MMS from my phone. I’m getting the same “Failed to send. Tap to try again”.

I’m afraid i can no longer help you… I have had an issue with that once, and it was due to a too high MMS picture quality. Let me explain, if you send a picture, MMS will compress it to be in the supported size, otherwise it won’t send. My last advice is to check if in Settings > Auto-compress MMS the Automatic box is checked.
That’s my last hope for you, maybe someone else, or your phone provider, will solve it.

The simple answer is QKSMS. Download and install. It works like clockwork!
