Cannot send messages via Zello

Hello,

for a bicycle event in Germany, the team would like to use Zello for coordination on the road. When I try to send a message, I receive the symbol “arrow up on horizontal line” which means, that my message is being uploaded. Now, the counter has been rising with every message and no one can read or hear my messages.

I have tried to change channel settings and I have contacted the guy directly to test everything. Nothing works until now. Then I went to Advanced Privacy, but there is nothing to find except of Google Firebase.

The test channel “echo” does work and gives back the message that I send into the system.

So: What might be the reason? What more can I try?

Regain your privacy! Adopt /e/OS the deGoogled mobile OS and online servicesphone

if the app uses firebase as storage for its messages, you wouldn’t want to block it. Screenshot?

I have turned off the Tracker control for Zello, but it isn’t better.

The tracker is Google Firebase Analytics.

In the meantime, some messages from last night went through, but new ones are blocked again. It is becoming frustrating, since it looks like a “works-works not”-problem without a hint, why it sometimes works or not.

Restarting the device now as a last resort. Perhaps some settings were not taken into account by the system and it will miraculously work now.

UPDATE:
Restart did not help. Turning off/on wifi didn’t help, too. I expected this behavior, but you never know. Wireguard did not help, too.

Still: The channel “echo” for testing works. So, there must be some interesting problem…

Just some thoughts …

Is it possible, that e/OS/ is blocking some ports?

Is it possible, that microG has any kind of problem?

in microG settings (Settings → System), did you register for cloud messaging, possibly device registration? anything off in there?

Everything is on in there. Signal and other apps work without any trouble. Zello is the first one after 4 years of usage that makes such a problem.

gave Zello a try, and things work for me™?

arrow up on horizontal line” which means, that my message is being uploaded

I don’t think so? for me those messages were already relayed in both text or media (and ofc audible) to the second device and channel member

What’s your network connection the moment you gave this a try, mobile network, wifi, or even overlayed via vpn?

In the meantime, Zello started working for me, too - from time to time. This is awkward and disturbing…

what describes the non-working case, what’s the indication?

My buddy being online seems to be the limiting factor. When he is offline, the messages won’t be uploaded. This is weird. No response from Zello so far. I have sent two messages with protocols…

It seems like the speak button on a walkie talkie, so that I can’t speak.

is the channel configured in a way that “everbody can speak any time”?

It is. And the direct channel between single contacts has no such option. So, to me - this is a kind of unusual problem.

@tcecyk Can you and I try Zello to find out, if it is an exclusive problem to my phone? I just found out that the other guy has Graphene OS on his, so this might have something to do with it.

Solved!

My friend has Graphene OS. The option “Exploit protection compatibility mode” made some trouble.

was it clear which setting specifically within Usage guide | GrapheneOS ?

You can enable our exploit protection compatibility mode via Settings > Apps > APP > Exploit protection compatibility mode. The exploit protection compatibility mode toggle will:

  • Switch from hardened_malloc to Android’s standard allocator (Scudo)
  • Reduce address space size from 48 bit to Android’s standard 39 bit
  • Disable memory tagging, unless the app has opted-in to it (only on compatible devices)
  • Allow native debugging (ptrace) access

All of these changes apply only to the selected app and can be toggled separately.

It is the only toggle with the text “Exploit protection compatibility mode” within Settings >> Apps. I don’t have a screenshot, but one will find it.

so I was misundertanding “separately”, as it is a toggle per app, not toggle per sub-option within the compatibility mode?
