Can't install caffeine under /e/OS 2.9 on FP4

I am testing a Murena Fairphone 4 with e/OS pre-installed as a tester for Waag Futurelab’s Mobifree project. The phone that arrived had e/OS 2.3 pre-installled. I upgraded via 2.4.1, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 and 2.8 to 2.9. The upgrading process was quite cumbersome: I had to manually resume the download many times and downloading was terribly slow.

In a post elsewhere on these forums "why does e/OS update on Fairphone 5 take several minutes? I learned that the caffeine tile could help in speeding up the download process. But when I tried to install via the App Lounge, I got the message “Unknown error!” and a button “try again”. I tried again but got the same error and a failed install. I would be grateful for any ideas on how I could proceed or if you know alternative methods to speed up the /e/OS updating process.

Caffeine doesn’t help with AppLounge issues only for the updater

I am not sure, but the Caffeine tile should be pre-installed? That’s the case at least on my /e/OS installation.
You may have to add it to your quick settings as described on this page (the Android used there seems to be Android 11 or earlier, but the description still applies).

It should be noted that App Lounge is not always that reliable… Emptying its cache, logging out and logging in again (also with an anonymous account) or even deleting the app data may help (note that you then have to reconfigure all your App Lounge settings).

A search on this forum should help you to get additional suggestions what to do.

A popular workaround is to use Aurora Store (com.aurora.store) that you can find in the Open Source section of App Lounge so that you should be able to download it even if there are problems with the anonymous Google account in App Lounge.

Thanks for your reaction. I wasn’t looking for solutions to AppLounge issues, but I would like to speed up the /e/OS update process…

App Lounge can be unreliable. I would try Aurora Store, you can install by downloading an apk from the developer web site here; Aurora It’s also available through F-Droid, https://f-droid.org

As you already found caffeine there is nothing else which is helping…

Thanks for your replies. I take note of your remarks on the AppLounge. This comes pre-installed on the Murena Fairphone 4 with /e/OS. One thing is sure: the caffeine tile is not pre-installed on the device.

I have delved a bit deeper into this. I found the Github repository for Caffeine Tile and it looks like the app had very little development since it was first published in 2016. Weird that it is still available in the F-Droid repository.

In the App lounge I did find Coffee, which seems to have similar functionality. Whereas Caffeine Tile was written in Java, Coffee is written in Kotlin (a language that I never heard of before). The git repository for Coffee shows regular commits, though at a low frequency. At the next update I will test if activating Coffee can speed up the upgrading process.

I find the Caffiene Tile pre-installed but it is not found in Settings > Apps or System apps. I found it first only by searching after press Edit Quick settings.

Is anyone able to confirm that Caffiene Tile is not installed on FP4 or other official build ?

In the Update process alternatively one only needs to change Settings > Display > Screen timeout to the maximum.

Thank you, that is interesting. I am clearly new to Android 14 and I didn’t know how I could access the “Edit” interface for “Quick settings”. I indeed did find Caffeine listed there. It took me a while to figure out, but now I have moved the Caffeine tile into the Quick settings panel. It was not immediately obvious to me that by swiping to the right I could enter a second panel with buttons/tiles. Great. That means I can remove the Coffee app.
