As the title says, despite individual texts working fine I can send but not receive group texts. I’m using a Nothing CMF Phone 1, though I bought it stock and installed e/os/ myself last week rather than purchasing it pre-installed from Murena. It’s on e/os/ version 3.4-a14-20260114569180-official-tetris (which my phone informs me is up to date as of this post), as well as the e/os/ bundled messaging app version 3.10.1. It also seems worth noting that group texts worked fine for at least a day before I stopped receiving them.
I’ve tried several troubleshooting methods so far to no success, including some found on this forum: resetting account sync settings (and manually syncing messages in the app), resetting my APN settings, and downloading Google Messages and attempting to enable RCS (unsuccessfully; it keeps getting stuck attempting to connect) before switching back to the bundled app. I’ve also tried switching to Fossify and QKSMS, which didn’t help either.
I’m going to try contacting my carrier T-Mobile and if that goes nowhere a fresh install of the OS. Either way I’ll report back here in the hope that at least the record will be useful to someone later. In the meantime hopefully someone else here has more knowledge and insight than me; please help.
I can’t edit the original post now, so I’ll put the promised update here. No luck with T-mobile; I’d apparently tried all their troubleshooting steps already. They did give me a new SIM card, which didn’t work, and suggested I contact google support, which I haven’t yet done.
My phone was able to receive a single group text last night though. Just one, and half an hour later no dice. Same recipients, same sender, no success. Baffling.
I’ve been dealing with this issue since getting a FP6 last month. I switched to Murena Mobile from my carrier hoping it would fix the issue before finding out it’s just not possible at this time. Here’s what Murena support said to me last week:
1) Does /e/OS support RCS or is there a workaround?
Currently, RCS is not supported on /e/OS. RCS services rely on Google (or Apple) servers, which are not integrated into the /e/OS ecosystem. At the moment, there is no official workaround to enable full RCS functionality on /e/OS.
If you previously used RCS on another Android device, we recommend disabling RCS there (or via Google’s web tool), otherwise messages may continue being sent to you via RCS instead of SMS/MMS: https://messages.google.com/disable-chat
2) Is there a timeline for RCS support?
We do not have a confirmed timeline for RCS support in /e/OS at this time.
3) Would RCS work if you install standard Android with the same Murena Mobile SIM?
Yes. RCS is handled by the device software and messaging services, not by the Murena Mobile plan itself. If you install a standard Android OS with Google services, RCS would typically work. Please note that we do not have the means to support Google stock Android, as this is not the default software we offer on this device. If you install Google stock Android on this phone, the level of assistance we can provide may be limited if you require service.
Unfortunately, it seems this is a limitation of microG (the core OS component replacing a lot of the Google code in Android). From what I’ve read elsewhere here and on the XDA forums it sounds like an RCS workaround is tough to implement, and will have to go through Google’s servers anyway. If you’re curious you can check out this bounty on GitHub for the latest (there’s a lot of AI bots trying to contribute)
For me, this was an untenable situation that left my partner playing social secretary for both of us, and so I’ve switched to an iPhone as my daily driver (plus wifi tethering for the FP6) until I have time to move my other accounts off the FP6 and reinstall it with an Android OS. This is a disappointing outcome, but the social friction caused by switching to /e/OS was just too much.
Hope that context is helpful to you while you figure out your own solution.
I am going to have to switch to stock Android as well. It is unfortunate because I really like what Murena is doing with e/os and outside of the issues with group messages I have had a great experience. I can live without RCS but being effectively isolated from my social groups due to not receiving their group messages is not tenable. I hope this is resolved in future updates so that I can return to e/os.
I was actually just dealing with this, also with a CMF Phone. What solved it for me was that one of the user’s messages kept sending RCS and that was enough to make the whole group chat not work. He toggled RCS off and it started working after that.
