Community install issues, Pixel 5, Android 14

Hi. Trying to flash the e/OS community version on a Pixel 5 with Android 14.The instructions say to extract the boot and dtbo images from the recovery.img file, but I haven’t found a way to do this. If I use boot and dtbo images extracted from the e/OS-zip, or those from LineageOS, I get “error boot prepare” after flashing recovery.img. I would still like to try the boot and dtbo from recovery.img. Anyone know how to extract them?

What OS are you using on the PC?

Hi and thanks for your interest. Windows 10, but I can access a Linux environment/machine.

The files are missing in the e-2.7-u release,

Look at those from recovery-IMG-e-2.7-t.ZIP that were present :

Thanks for that. It must be something else I’m doing because error boot prepare is still returned. It says that after flashing the three files you should reboot to recovery with the device powered off. With my way I got error boot prepare. With your suggestion I got a message about powering on again, and when I did I got error boot prepare again. Puzzling.

Oh, ok. Will try that. Thanks.

extract them from e-2.7-u-20250111460593-community-redfin.zip using this method : [Walkthrough] Extract eRecovery and boot images using payload-dumper-go

You are tempted to install /e/OS-U community because of the higher Android 14 version.

However, /e/OS-T Official stable offers the option (avb custom key) to lock the bootloader again.

In addition, /e/OS Official stable builds are serviced by a maintainer, which is not the case with /e/community builds.

Still error boot prepare.

The instructions say to reboot to recovery after turning the phone off. I assume the only way to do that in fastboot mode is by using the volume down key to get to the Power off option on the screen, and then pressing the power button. Is that correct?

Hi. I have one Pixel 5 with the official build on it. The one I’m playing with is a spare one that I’d like to use to learn more about how things work.

It’s easier to boot into recovery mode to verify the r/e/covery installation if you navigate with Pixel hardware keys via the menu and select the Recovery option.

Unfortunately, regardless of what I try I end up back at the fastboot screen with error boot prepare. Which reminds me, is there any of getting a fresh start from that point besides using the android flash tool to go back to stock?

If you want to install /e/OS-T officially stable, it is advisable to install Stock Android 13.0.0 (TQ3A.230901.001, Sep 2023) in advance.

If you want to install /e/OS-U commuity, it is advisable to install Stock Android 14.0.0 (UP1A.231105.001.B2, Feb 2024) in advance.

The Android Flash Tool is not supported by every web browser. Flashing works perfectly with the “clean” ungoogled chormium browser

I used the easy-installer to install e/OS on the latest Android 14 in the flash tool. It just downgraded it to 13. What I’m trying to do now is learn how to install it manually on the other device which is Android 14. Thanks for the recommended Android 14 link.

Other option is to install "T recovery-e, that offer the needed additional partitions,
and then, using it install the U /e/build… (the /e/ build will first update the recovery-e)

This guide will show you three different methods to flash the stock firmware on Pixel devices - via Android Flash Tool, ADB Sideload, and Fastboot Script.

I know how to flash using the flash tool and via fastboot, and I’ve installed ROMs on this and other devices via sideload. I’m just having an issue manually installing e/OS on Android 14 with them. Next I’ll try piero’s suggestion to install "T recovery-e and then install the U /e/build.
Thanks!

piero, would you please clarify re Other option is to install "T recovery-e, that offer the needed additional partitions, and then, using it install the U /e/build… (the /e/ build will first update the recovery-e)
When I use the T-recovery, which files should I flash before the recovery image?
Thanks!

Orthodox way is Community install issues, Pixel 5, Android 14 - #8 by piero

Alternative safe way could be installing the T version
(flash dtbo-e-2.6t boot-e-2.6-t, recovery-e-2.6-t, boot to recovery-2.6-t and install e-2.6-t), then dirty upgrade to U version (boot to recovery-e-2.6-t to install e-2.7-u)

Unofficial or experimental way :
My previous proposition was a shortcut of these alternative steps… : (flash dtbo-e-2.6t boot-e-2.6-t, recovery-e-2.6-t, boot to recovery-e-2.6-t and directly install e-2.7-u)
Even (flash dtbo-e-2.6t boot-e-2.6-t, recovery-e-2.7-u, boot to recovery-e-2.7-u and install e-2.7-u) should also work
