Compatibility Fiat App

Dear all,

I’m considering installing /e/OS on my Fairphone 5, but still researching app compatibility.

The last app I could not find anything about is the app for my Fiat 500e. I use it to remotely activate AC – really handy in winter.

Has anyone tried the Fiat app on /e/OS yet and can confirm whether it works?

Edit: I’m talking about this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fca.myconnect.fiat

Thanks!

Best,

I would be surprised if it had any problems. There are some rare (mostly banking I think) apps which don’t work (partially or all) because they use some strict play integrity garbage.

Vastest majority of apps work perfectly (also thanks to microg)

There is a database where people review apps compatibility on google-free android devices (Plexus), and while there isn’t any entry for the fiat app there are some thumbs app for car apps from the same group (stellantis) like the one for kia and citroen.

Also i have a fp5 with eos and i can install and run it fine (in demo mode, i don’t have a fiat account) so I’m not signing it with blood, but there is that.

Be aware of a potential problem that’s starting to develop, however.

Thank you, @Monte_Prevost, for trying out the app and mentioning Plexus. I didn’t know Plexus, so that was very helpful, too!

And thank you too, @Taurus, for flagging that others are experiencing issues with their car apps lately. This emphasizes that there still is some ‘risk’ left.

I might just take the risk and install /e/OS to try things out. If things don’t work out, I can still go back when it gets colder, and I want to defrost my windshield remotely.

The app will allow you to activate features of the car, will it start it?
You said AC, do you mean air conditioning? I ask because you said in winter, I was scratching my head.

I have a part-time co-worker that has a Fiat in North America. He is mostly retired but when he comes to work I will investigate.

The app can only activate features or let you change the charging speed, unlock the car etc. You cannot start the car via the app.

Yes, by AC I meant air conditioning. Maybe climate control is the better term since, depending on the current temperature, this feature either cools down or heats up the temperature to a default value of 22 °C.

Thank you, @Jets!

The sort of apps which might fail on /e/OS are where the app robustly supports Google to identify the user. So unlock the car from “SafeLock” (or any similar name) or if the app allows for payment at refueling / recharging then the app may behave like a banking app and success will depend on the method to ensure your ID.

I imagine that “conditioned air” is useful in the dead of winter, too.

Hi everyone,

I recently decided to install /e/OS on my Fairphone 5 and tested the Fiat app to see if it would work. It runs as expected – both with a locked and unlocked bootloader.

When opening the app, a warning message appears, but you don’t need to click anything. After a few seconds, the message disappears, and the app starts as usual. All features seem fully functional.

Here’s the message (in German) that pops up:

“Auf Ihrem Gerät (sic!) ein kompromittiertes Betriebssystem erkannt. Um diese Anwendung weiterhin nutzen zu können, wird der Zugriff auf den sicheren Speicher Ihres Gerätes deaktiviert. Bitte bestätigen.
Annehmen”

Translation:

“A compromised operating system has been detected on your device. To continue using this application, access to your device’s secure storage will be disabled. Please confirm.
Accept”

That’s amusing.

@Taurus

Forgive me I forget that in other parts of the world some use AC in winter, good point. Where I am many days in February are -30 Celsius or even colder.

I actually meant that warmed air in winter is also “conditioned” air.

(The AC unit - or perhaps I should say “HVAC unit” - in a car is used for heating as well as cooling.)
