Developer options unavailable

Hi,

Yesterday I succesfully installed /e/os on my Pixel 8. Everything worked fine, exept setting up a screen lock. After searching the internet I found out that in order to fix that, I need to re-install Google, disable screenlock, and reinstall /e/os.

Unfortunately, I’m stuck on that one. Steps I took:

  • tapped 7 times on build. Message: developer options available.
  • Tried to open developer options to enable USB-debugging and unlock OEM.
  • However - developer-options doesn’t open. Instead the main Settingsmenu opens.

If I try to flash my phone via the Android Flash Tool (https://flash.android.com/) my phone gets recognized, I can select it, but get an connection error (Google, Pixel 8; Serial Number: 38250DLJH000ZK; Connection error38250DLJH000ZK);

  • After that: Device Inspection Failed [The selected device was not able to be opened. Confirm it is not in use by another application and then try removing the device and reconnecting it to continue.

On Windows if you use command line adb.exe then the background server it starts can interfere with flashstation. Try running adb.exe kill-server and then trying again.

If you don’t use adb.exe or that doesn’t resolve the issue then restarting the browser or your computer may help.]

  • After retrying the error: [Flash Failed The USB transfer failed. This is a known issue on some Windows computers. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the device and try again. If you continue to see this issue closing and reopening your browser may help.]

Did of course try this. But restarting my PC or reconnecting didn’t work.

Root problem is (I presume) that I’m not able tot enable USB-debuging, an ulock OEM (but that may not be necessary)

Known issue? Anyone else experienced this bug? Or did I do something wrong?

When you now tap on build number multiple times do you see a notification “You are already a developer” ? If not perhaps try again.

Developer options is found from very near the bottom of Settings > System.

To switch and activate USB debugging is an essential.

Tnx for replying.

I did find the build no, and tapped it 7x. And got the message ‘you mentioned - ‘you are already a developer’

What happens when you use the search section in settings?
Maybe you can find it there, or even a sub-section like ‘/e/OS developer options’.

Tnx for the suggestion, but I did try that.

Searching for USB debugging, and pressing the link doesn’t work. I’ll get the error ‘Settings keeps stopping’. After that, the main setting menu appears again

Hello @Cor, Welcome to the /e/ users forum.

Try Settings > Apps > See all apps > top right 3 dot menu > Show system > Settings > Storage and cache > Clear storage.

Not sure yet, but looks like it’s rebooting/flashing Android… Il’l keep you (all) posted.

Reflashing in recovery mode worked! Very grateful  Tnx Piero (and aibd and others) for helping me out!

Love /e/os

Hello, I have the same issue, impossible to access to the Developer Options, I am on FP6 but with /e/OS directly installed on it by Murena (and sold on FP website). But I don’t have any pop-up message when I tap on the build number.

For practical reasons (mainly 2FA), reset the phone is not my first option at all, I would prefer wait for an /e/OS update to repair the bug.

Any other options available please?

How many times did you tap on it ?

More than 10 times, it’s not my first ride

Can you reproduce Post #5?

Ofc the OP issue was “you are already a developer”.

Not your first ride but speed of tapping is also critical.

I try one tap per sec, 2 tap per sec and my max speed, no results

I try to search for USB and see if the USB debug is here, and no, just the USB network sharing and others options.

Developer options is activated by tap rapidly. I just tested, and it looks like my rate is 15 per second.

Hey @Cor, I’m so happy that I found your post! Because I seem to have exactly the same problem with a Pixel 8. I Installed /e/os, couldn’t setup screen lock, need to re-install google, now I can’t access the developer settings to enable usb-debugging.

Could you elaborate on how you reflashed /e/os without usb-debugging? I can access the recovery mode and have tried factory-reset but the problem still persists. (I originally installed /e/os using the official installer in the browser)

I’m not sure how I solved this. I remember re-installing Google. Unlock/remove PIN/fingerprint. After that re-installing /e/os. (Still very happy with that!)

I just followed the protocol which was suggested in this tread, actually. But did cost some tweaking and trying, especially re-installing Google.

You describe that you need to return to Stock Android due to Factory Reset Protection. This is a suitable tool Android Flash Tool. Many other threads on the forum about FRP have hashtag frp.

You ideally want USB debugging, but this tool will use Fastboot mode where USB debugging is not strictly required. There is a risk of difficulties having no USB debugging if one fails to install cleanly in Fastboot mode.

Study carefully how to use the tool before you start.

Pixel 8 have a anti-rollback lock which could brick the phone. You must beware of this in returning to stock (but the tool will hopefully try to protect you). More info in this thread Pixel 8 flashing process - looking for advice
