Do not receive gmail SMS on phone

I am trying to verify my phone number for gmail but I never receive the SMS. I received a SMS from signal.
Why am I not receiving text from gmail ?

Firstly did you intend to degoogle your phone?

I want to minimize google, gmail can use imaps so it looks like just and other email account. Google would know my IP and logins, but that is all.
It is better than knowing my location all the time.
