Does /e/ block ICE's use of Paragon's Graphite spyware?

I don’t really understand the technology. Are there settings in /e/OS that can help block the spyware ICE is using? (Not trying to make this political. I don’t care that it’s ICE; I care that it’s a major invasion of privacy, dragnet surveillance without a warrant.)

/e/ can help with part of it, for instance not contributing to the location data sold by Google. But your phone OS can’t protect you from things like the Flock cameras the article metions (there is a pretty concerning map showing where these are located if you really wanted to try to avoid them), or other people sharing data about you, or from websites tracking you.

The type of spyware mentioned relies on zero-day leaks. There is little that can be done against targeted spyware.

Your very limited options include things like avoiding all Google, Meta and Amazon services, not using WhatsApp or iMessage (as these are common attack vectors), using a hardened system like GrapheneOS or iOS in Lockdown Mode, using an ad blocker in your browser, avoiding social media and rebooting your phone at least once a day, checking the connections it makes using a firewall etc.

Ultimately, if you think you may be targeted by a state actor from any country, you should seek professional support.

Also keep in mind that once freedom in a country tips beyond a certain point, you simply stand no chance because they can just physically force you to give them access. At that point, leaving no traces will actually make you a target because you stand out.

But the more people who start working on leaving no trace, the less such people will stand out. Eventually.

Thanks. That is helpful. It gives me a starting point. I’d love to install Graphene on a phone but can’t justify buying a Pixel when I have 4-1/2 old smartphones sitting around doing nothing!

And yes, the Flock cameras are a nightmare. I’ve been playing with this guy’s 2D mask, mostly for fun: URME Paper Mask — URME Surveillance. His 3D mask is hard to figure out, but I might print it on transfer paper and transfer onto fabric.

I am also curious whether it’s legal to cover your car in a wrap with photos of license plates, and I’m planning to get the attached image printed on fabric to make a cape or mask or something.

(Anyone is welcome to it. You should be able to tile it as big as your want.)

I’m not at any risk ATM, but I do like effing with the powers that be, LOL!

Agreed! I do have /e/OS installed on two phones (same brand different models). Interestingly it’s better on the older one but still fine on my daily driver. And it does feel good to stick it to the man, LOL!

No eOS will not block Graphite. I have read on the internet that it resides in memory and a reboot loses it but I wonder if that is not misinformation.

It has even been said by said that eOS will not stop government targeting in this forum. Read this post and the Wired article in it:
