I bought a new Pixel 8. 3 SIMs from 2 different providers. The phone will not connect to a cellular network. My only access is WiFi. The phone sees the SIM, knows the phone number, knows the IMEI, can send and receive calls and tests, but will not connect to the data network.
you can probably get things moving faster in support stomping here, in the meantime the advice the forum mostly offers is:
check the APN settings, in doubt customize them yourself according to provider website
enter into diagnostics (*#*#4636#*#* in Dialer) and force some baseband options to LTE only or NR only, force data service enablement for the cellular service to relent finally
APN - I followed T-mobile’s guide for the settings. Was not able to set MMS protocol, there was no option for it.
Diagnostics - I tried LTE only, NR only and LTE/NR. Still won’t connect. I didn’t see data service, but Enable DSDS is On, if that’s what you mean.
should be in the upper right kebab menu. Can be toothless though. Did you ever contact your carrier? might be worth it, they control the registration layer
I should have looked at the settings on the Pixel 6 first - its what I’m migrating from. All of its settings are exactly what the Pixel 8 had before I edited them. The only difference is Enable DSDS is turned off.
The guy at the T-mobile store did what he could do, including a new SIM. I suppose I have to call T-moblie support.
screenshot 1+2 - make sure to enable mobile data for the SIM, force it in diagnostics (though as said, can be toothless). Extra screenshot 3 for current ims registration, not relevant yet for you:
this is general troubleshooting, it’s likely it doesn’t help you. With baseband issues, if it isn’t apn at times it can be firmware or oem settings
I have T-Mobile in the USA. I think they’re best carrier here for customer support, but still you’ll probably have to spend a lot of time troubleshooting with them. If you get nowhere with that, I’d try another phone if it’s still within the return window. It could be a hardware defect.
When I’m on T-mobile USA, I often have to go to “GSM only” for a few seconds, wait until the “E” (Edge) indicator appears in the notifications, then switch to “GSM/WCDMA/LTE (PRL),” whereupon it connects to 4G+ right away.
Selecting 3G in the phone’s main network settings also works. I know T-mobile doesn’t have 3G anymore, but I think that “3G” setting actually tries 2G as well.
At this point, I want to return it. I shouldn’t have to waste this much time and effort fighting with a brand new phone just to get it connected to a data network.
