Donate to focus on some bug resolution

Hello,

I am donating to this project for some years now. This OS is so good without the google layer. But today since the last update I cannot use my bank app anymore. It’s very painful !!! So I would like to know if we can donate to the project in order to focus development on some topics that are important for us.

Regards.

The development needed for banking Apps to work is that the developers of the banking Apps first need to throw out any Google dependencies which can fail on “degoogled” OSes, and then second need to evaluate which security checks they really need their Apps to run on Android Custom ROMs like /e/OS to assume a safe banking environment.

You can donate to /e/OS developers as much as you like, they are not the ones who can fix banking Apps failing left and right, they and the microG developers mostly can just try to work around issues after they appeared, and this will never result in a permanent solution. The Apps themselves need to change.

Just an additional information: This is actually quite difficult. Good security in programming has more traps than you would expect: It usually does not only involve the correct implementation of algorithms, but also the prevention of side channel attacks etc. (If an encryption is broken, it is not uncommon that the problem is not because of the encryption algorithm itself, but because of the implementation that allowed to retrieve the secret key or the like.)

A “golden rule” in computer security I have read is therefore not to do it by yourself, but to use implementations by others who know what they are doing.

Hence, I do not necessarily fault the banking app developers to rely on Google dependencies: For all its faults, Google employs (probably) some of the best programmers and security experts in the world.

That said: I also wish that there would be an open standard, vetted by security experts etc., that all Android-based ROMs (Google Android, /e/OS, …) could use to offer secured environments e.g. for banking apps.

As for @smutel s request:

I agree: I would also like to see some official way (some voting mechanism?) so that the /e/OS developers get a reliable picture what the community wishes that they should do or fix next. :+1:

You said you bank app work before update. Have tried removing then reinstalling the app, will it even open and what phone are you using?

Yes, I did it.

I am not sure (how to be sure ?) but it’s since the last /e/ OS update and not the app update …

If you are not on ‘official’ build, you could try to switch the boot slot.

I am using the 3.2 official version.

Tentos is on point; banking apps are always going to be a cat-and-mouse game, because banks are invariably going to have a perception that “unofficial or user-modifiable = magnet for fraud”. There may be some truth to it, probably more than we’d like, probably less than they claim, but they’re certainly not going to see “our app doesn’t work on a modded phone” as a bug that they need to spend time and money fixing.

On the /e/OS side, amongst the issues is that there are so many banking apps. Admittedly, I’ve been extremely fortunate that my banks so far haven’t given me any trouble for running on a rooted phone, but I’m aware that the day is coming when they will. Thus far, I’ve gotten around it by just going to the bank’s website in a browser; so far they have nearly all of the same functionality as the app, so it’s my go-to plan when the time comes.

Perhaps your bank’s web portal will be a usable middle ground for the time being; I would submit that it’s worth coming to terms with the fact that the time is coming when /e/OS won’t be able to run most banking apps anymore, and an unfortunate decision will need to be made….
