Duolingo thinks it doesn't have microphone access

I’m a long time user of Duolingo and it’s the only application that has the below problem…

Duolingo has some speaking exercises in which you can speak instead of typing a sentence. When you select this type of exercise, Duolingo asks you to enable access to the microphone. When you give it such a permission, it goes on asking for it. I checked that microphone access is indeed included in the app’s permissions.

All the other applications that need to use the microphone run without any problem.

Anybody else facing this issue with /e/OS?

I’m using the latest version of /e/OS on Fairphone 5. Duolingo was working fine on the same device before I switched to /e/OS one year ago.

I have a similar issue with Duolingo. Initially it worked ok with the speaking excercises but for several months now it hasn’t presented me with any speaking excercises at all.

I don’t get any popups asking for permissions or anything though.

I am also using the latest version of /e/OS on Fairphone 5

At least we’re not alone, thanks!
That’s weird that you don’t even have the button, and you don’t see the speaking exercises at all…

I just found a post on reddit with someone having the same issue. They found that Duolingo depends on the Google App for microphone access. They re-enabled the Google App, restarted the phone and the speaking excercises returned.

I installed the Google App for AndroidAuto and then removed it a little while ago. That must be what broke mine, maybe it is the same for you?

Interesting! Duolingo probably needs the “Google” app for speech recognition.
I haven’t tried yet because it doesn’t look trivial to install the “Google” app (couldn’t find it in the defaut /e/OS app store), and because I’m more interested in the Google free experience than in speaking exercises

Thanks for the tip!
