I encounter the same issue with downloading via firefox focus or Frost for facebook. All app using androids download manager and blokada.
I received the OTA update today,
Phone: Oneplus One - bacon.
Iām agree with all feedback on /e/ app store. I wait the black/dark theme.
Apps updates:
- I put here two screenshot , the first is Aurora update tab and the /e/ apps store one:
The apps store looks very promising. Love the slick UI.
Will we have to reinstall all our non-system apps downloaded from F-Droid and YALP in order for the updates to work though ?
What Iād like in the future:
- A dark mode.
- Fresher apps updates.
- Apps filters (by language, privacy rating, open source or not etcā¦).
Hi! Thank you for your feedback! Iām glad you like the UI.
No, you most likely do not need to reinstall apps downloaded from other sources.
Thanks for your suggestions for future updates. Dark mode is already on my ToDo list, hopefully I can get to it soon
One question: I donāt think I know what you mean by fresher app updates
I like it, but there is still a lot of work to do: it can be somewhat buggy (already reported). It would be nice if the app store could find installed apps, which it apparently canāt. Shouldnāt there be a category āSecurity and Privacyā? I also donāt understand wat an app as this (screenshot) does in the app store of a ādegoogledā system like /e/:
Thanks for your answer.
Glad to know about the upcoming dark mode !
By āfresher apps updatesā I meant more up to date *.apks.
For instance, on Apps, Brave Browser is 1.0.91 while itās 1.0.94 On Yalp (Play Store).
Ah okay. Thanks for clarifying.
I am sorry to say I am rather disappointed with the new Apps store. I thought it would be a more curated selection of privacy and security adhering apps. Instead I see rubbish like Facebook, Google+ and āFake Girlfriend Video Chatā. What does this store have over Yalp or Aurora? Maybe if it had a special privacy section
prominently listed it would be worth it but it does not. How does this app benefit a person who just installed /e/ fresh and is looking for apps that align with the /e/ philosophy?
(fixed typo)
I am not a dev. Heck, Iām not even a user yet as I am awaiting a phone with /e/ preinstalled so please take what Iām about to say with a large grain of salt and great respect-
I think we can agree that anyone using the /e/ OS is already cognizant generally of the risks of the apps they installā¦
Iām not sure I want any organization (no matter how well-intentioned) to limit my ability to install an app/use my phone as desired and in keeping with my own risk tolerance so long as it is technically feasible.
So if someone wants to use (or has to use) a FB, Google, etc. app I respectfully submit that there should be no prohibition nor disparagement in doing so. I believe that disallowing access to these type of apps is contrary to the goal and philosophy of freedom of use.
Again, just to be clear, Iām not a dev and my thoughts arenāt sanctioned by them.
EDIT: Made a sentence a bit clearer.
Iām a dev and I agree with you.
People shouldnāt be limited in their app installation. I think itās important we donāt forget that we want mum and dads to use our OS. So they could begin to think about their privacy. And maybe donāt install FB and others.
As soon as they arenāt installed by default I think itās ok
I agree, and there is no prohibition at the system level. You can install almost any app you want and it should work as long as MicroG can emulate the necessary google bits. Anyone can install Yalp or Aurora and get access to all the play store apps.
Why not just include Aurora as the installed App store? It seems the limited development resources could be better spent on other things than the Apps app if it doesnāt offer something different.
I agree with the viewpoint that w/e/ should not be dictating what users install on their device. Then that becomes the same as a default Samsung ROM or a MIUI ROM which is packed with uninstallable system apps. Let the user decide what he / she wants to install. If I am foolish enough to install a Facebook or WhatsApp then that is a risk I am taking! Unfortunately a lot of our friends and relatives are still on these apps so unless we plan to live in total isolation I guess we will still need these apps to be around for some time . At best we should give the user a brief warning about the dangers of installing the app.
I guess what could be helpful is that you can filter out apps that you donāt want to be offered. That would be your own decision then.
If it is easy to handle and there is something meaningful to filter that could work.
I see that there is preparation for an user app ratng already. Maybe a user privacy rating could be added and then be part of the filter option?
A new version is available for Netguard (I check on https://e.foundation/apps.html). My version is 2.243 and the new is 2.244. Apps doesnāt show me the update. Iām in the last version of /e/.
no ofcourse, /e/ should not dicate and tell users what to install but the app store is a great place to make new proposals.
- Like accessing FB with an open source wrapper is a great first step but users need to discover those possibilities.
- And Open Source in general must be a new thing to many Play Store users as Open Soruce software there is no so easy to discover. Letās make it easy to discover less data hungry and OSS apps and letājust s provide the other ones to those who call for it.
This is the tipping point for me. My S7 is on its last leg and I want to switch. The problem is that I depend on it and canāt afford to mess it up. This is pulling me over nicely
Great work guys! Iāve been using it since the weekend and itās already become a complete replacement for my iPhone and Pixel. Of course there are bugs, but this is a huge step. Itās a fully functioning iPhone/Gphone replacement. Well done!
I created an issue with a log file : https://gitlab.e.foundation/e/wiki/en/issues/83.
This granny has never been on FB and will never be. Nor on Whatsapp. And I use nothing from Google. I try to avoid these products from the surveillance industry whenever I can. There are plenty of youngsters however who are hooked to Instagram and all the other popular stuff. Of course there should be freedom of choice, but we should not encourage these products when trying to find an alternative to big tech.
Hi,
I just started using Apps. I could manage to install 2 apps but I have trouble installing the one I want which is āMediapartā.
After pressing the Install button, no download occurs and the Install button reappears at once.
Is this problem due to āMediapartā itself ?
Thanks.
