I just noticed the e foundation is listed as contributor to Overture maps.
Did I miss any announcement there?
I could think of quite many reasons why this project could be interesting for e indeed, but I don’t want to speculate here.
Personally I find Overture maps an interesting project even though it departs from the ideal of open street maps (to which I have also contributed regularly both financially and as contributor) so I welcome in any case the collaboration.
I just read the names of the parties (AWS, Meta, TomTom, Microsoft ) involved. Therefore I have my doubts that this will ever be a meaningful replacement for anything that is even comparable to OpenStreetMap.
it’s complementing OSM, not trying to replace. Capital can do lots with ML compute and satellite imagery nowadays. And if murena is ever to host an online map, it licenses additional datasets.
I followed the launch of Overture Maps with great interest because it was announced as if it were finally going to break Google’s monopoly on geodata. Everything on an open basis, under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation. But I’m not a geodata dude; even today (despite having seen a few videos and articles about Overture), I still have no idea what they’re doing and how I, as an end user, can benefit from it ^^ Everything I’ve read about it has been a little too technical.
Yes, we are working on a maps app of our own. This information was shared some time back during our 3.0 live launch.
At present the development work is in its initial stages. There is a lot of ground to be covered. Will share more details when it is ready for detailed testing.
