I tell a lie, it hasn’t worked. The mail app works fine as long as no account is set ; when I log in again, after a restart it goes back to crashing.

No. It’s not a well-known ‘big’ one either (hotmail, gmail, yahoo etc) - it’s a POP3 service run by a man in a village I used to live in.
