e/OS community vs official version (android 15 vs android 14)

I have a pixel 8 (shiba) with the latest community version of e/os, which is based on Android 15. During the last part of the installation I noticed that relocking the bootloader did not work. It is my understanding that the official version of e/os doesn’t have that problem. But as the official version is still based on Android 14, I cannot go back to this official version. Is that correct? Could I go the route of first completely get rid of e/os by installing stock android, and then installing the official e/os version? When will this be upgraded to Android 15?

only thing that matters is the patch level date. You can go to A14 if it’s security patch level date is ahead and relock (use the next version, but read the release notes that point out the SPL). But: you should be aware of the SPL date you had before flashing a custom rom to know that you’re in the clear. In any case, be dilligent to not get into an unrecoverable state.

As for when shiba official goes A15, you can use the weekly dev updates to ask

… from your question I was not sure if you are aware of the May 2025 anti-rollback trap. Stated as

Warning: The May 2025 update for Pixel 6 (6, 6 Pro, 6a) and Pixel 8 (8, 8 Pro, 8a) devices contains a bootloader update that increments the anti-roll back version for the bootloader. This prevents the device from rolling back to previous vulnerable versions of the bootloader. After flashing the May 2025 update on these devices you won’t be able to flash and boot older Android 15 builds.

Thanks for the answer; it is much appreciated.

With the Community version installed will this also receive OTA updates? Or is this only applicable to the Official version?

all builds from /e/ receive monthly updates

Regarding the updates, I am confused as to what is the process. I currently have the community version installed (3.0.4-a15 , July 12th). But under Settings-> About Phone → Android Version I see a security update of June 1, 2025. Isn’t that a bit old? Shouldn’t we have had a security update OTA already? Or am I missing something?

Yes, in the ideal world with unlimited developer resources.

As stated above:

Right now the dev priority is to get A15 finished and out the door - that unfortunately means there will be less if any updates until then…

Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense. I am not impatient, just try to understand how things work in the e/os eco-system. I am new here. Thanks again, much appreciated!
