Af far as I know, SIM cards can become obsolete after some years. There are different manufacturers and some SIM cards on some phones can become incompatible after a while (e.g. OS-updates). Sometimes the problem is just that SMS don’t work anymore, or it can be more like on your case. Replacing that SIM card by ordering a new one can do the trick.
