Eligibility for bootloader unlocking?

If I understand correctly, not all Motorola phones are eligible to have the bootloader unlocked. But I’m interested in a specific phone which the seller tells me is “factory unlocked.”

I realize it’s not certain until the unlock data is entered in the Motorola Support site, but is it reasonable to assume a “factory unlocked” phone is eligible? Is there other information that will increase the odds of it being eligible. It’s unreasonable to ask the seller to check the unlock information.

The seller may mean “not locked to a specific mobile service provider,” as opposed to “bootloader unlocked,” so I would be cautious.

If you know the full model number and perhaps the region it was marketed to (e.g. Asia, North America, Global, etc.), then you could do some searching at XDAforums.com, lineageOS.org, and obviously here in these forums to find an answer.

Still, the surest way to know is to have the seller dial the service short code, check the configuration, and tell you if it says “bootloader unlockable: yes.”
