Ethernet connection

Hi,

I would like to know if your device running /e/OS 4.x has internet connection through Ethernet.

Background:

I sometime use the Ethernet connection with my /e/OS devices (Ethernet to USB adapter + USB A female to USB C male adapter).

What I have noticed recently is that I have no internet connection in such a way with my Gigaset GS290. So I checked the other devices, and the result is:

Gigaset GS290 /e/OS 4.1.1 A15 : no internet

Samsung Tab S5e /e/OS 4.2 A15 : no internet

Sony XA2 /e/OS 3.5 A15: internet OK

Given that the adapters in the 3 cases are the same, I exclude an issue with the hardware. But my doubt is: does /e/OS 4.x no longer allow Ethernet connection?

Thank you in advance

I just checked for you @sonyxa2 on Gigaset GS6 Pro with e/OS v.4.2:

Switched off wi-fi and mobile internet

And ethernet connected fine

You can see wi-fi/mobile off and ethernet connection on. Speed may not be great as fresh connection and affected by VPN which slows it down.

I used ethernet cable from router via DELL adapter RJ45 to USB C connected to the phone’s USB port.

All good on my handset :+1:

P.S. @sonyxa2 I had problems with connecting to the router in general on ver.4.0 as WPA3 was not supported and I had to use WPA2 until upgraded /e/ to ver.4.1 when WPA3 started working fine and still supported O.K. on ver.4.2 :slightly_smiling_face:

Is there any possibility that the router recognises the adapter/Sony as its associated device then the next combination looks to the router like an “imposter” and is refused connection?

Can you get Admin access to the router to check how its resources are being shared out? If not, I guess Reset router would give a fresh start.

Hmmm, I am not sure if WPA security protocol is relevant at all with ethernet connection @sonyxa2 , you might ask your router provider, but I guess your Sony handset with old /e/ might be using WPA2 and connects fine where newer 4.x versions default to WPA3 which would really matter with wi-fi connection - are you sure wi-fi on phones is off? Ask your router provider if WPA important with cable connection (might be not), if it matters then see if the router manages WPA3 fine. As I say, my understanding would be with ethernet cable it might be irrelevant but older /e/ seems to work… Might raise a ticket with Murena as well?

P.S. Could you screen shot your succesful Sony handset ethernet connection (full screen) by any chance?

WPA stands for Wi-Fi Protected Access and is not involved when using ethernet so we can rule that out.

But maybe it’s got something to do with the chipset capabilities just like with being able to mirror your screen on an external monitor?

That said: I would have expected that it would work on the S5e because it’s an high end device.

I have a USB C adapter (two of them, different brands) and both work with ethernet. This is with a Moto Edge 2021.

Just an FYI for users here, check to see if your router can run openwrt to solve may connectivity issues. Running openwrt turns consumer grade routers into commercial grade routers.

On these devices internet-connection via ethernet works flawlessly ootb:

  • Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM-G930F)4.2-s-20260814662912-official-herolte
  • Pixel 4a 4.2-a16-20260814662908-community-sunfish
  • Samsung Tab S5e (SM-T725) 4.2-a15-20260816663280-community-gts4lv

(my adapters are noname devices: ethernet to USB-A male → USB-A female to USB-C male / Micro-USB in case of S7)

to the contrary in my case

Thank you all for your feedbacks. Really appreciated.

Actually, it seems strange that @obacht could have connection with the same device and same /e/OS version, while I could not….

I have just seen that there is a 4.3 version available for the S5e, perhaps I should try again after upgrading….

Some answers to the questions raised: I could navigate Murena site from the SonyXA2 , so connectivity was there while phone was in airplane mode with WiFi off.

Router is on OpenWRT, so I can check if you tell me what to look for (unfortunately, my knowledge on OpenWRT is not much better than /e/OS…), but I thought that Ethernet was not bothered by WPAx, as @ieder1 mentioned.

I did not think about the router itself not allowing the devices… if that it is the case, I struggle to understand why in the past I could connect the GS290 with a previous version of /e/OS… but perhaps there is something that I do not grasp about networking…. I should take the time to check again while connected to LuCI…

It isn’t, unless wi-fi got sneakily switched on without you noticing as priority internet access channel…

I experienced that the adapters do play a role, some simply do not work reliably across all devices, especially the cheap ones, have you cross-checked with a different one by any chance?

Thank you @obacht , I will have to check (I should have more cheap USB A to C adapters, but for the Ethernet to USB A, I only have a model with a logo of a certain fruit…, which should not be cheapest on the market , although an old 100 Mb)

Hi,

I guess @obacht is right and I will mark his reply as solution … My feeling: devices are picky with Ethernet connection …

Long explanation:

other round of trials, after changing the USB C to USB A to a more (much more) expensive model and the Ethernet cable (who knows …). I could not change the USB A to Ethernet adapter, since I have only one model available. Result:

SonyXA2: connection OK. Repetition with the previous adapter and cable: connection OK

Samsung Tab S5e /e/OS 4.3 = updated from 4.2. Connection OK with the new adapter + Ethernet cable

Gigaset GS290 /e/OS 4.3 = updated from 4.1.1. Connection NOK (in any configuration adapters / cables).

Hi,

Last words, just for those interested…

I came across another Ethernet adapter today, USB C male to Ethernet female (so avoiding the USB C male to USB A female adapter I previously had to use with the USB A male to Ethernet female adapter).

Guess what …. also the Gigaset GS290 /e/OS 4.3 now can have Ethernet connection working… given the price of this latest adapter (much cheaper that the one with a certain fruit engraved…), that is not a reliable criteria to predict whether it could work or not …

OK, definitely this confirms that some devices are picky with adapters …

Thank you again to all of you that supported this discussion
