I might have to replace my e/OS/ phone this year and want to make it a Fairphone with e/OS/. None of the new features of the Gen 6 excite me and the 5 is cheaper with still a 5-year warranty until the end of the year, I think. How are FP5 users finding that device generally and in 2025, and any thoughts on the FP5 vs Gen 6 if anyone has tried both?
I moved from an iphone to the FP5 so, cannot compare it with any other android phones. I am quite happy with it. I had a look at the FP6 specification and it didn’t really seem to have any significant improvements over the FP5 that justified considering an upgrade.
Build Quality : I did drop the phone and damage the edge of the screen very slightly which made me think that it was less well built than the iphone. So, I replaced the standard case that Murena / Fairphone sell with a different one from Amazon - brand name Tudia - which protects the edge of the screen better. I would definitely recommend a better case like this to protect the phone from damage.
It is logical that a modular, repairable phone like a fairphone may be more prone to damage than a standard, soldered one. But, then that was a big selling point for me - I wanted a repairable phone that was supported for a good number of years that I would not need to replace.
If size and weight are a factor, the FP6 is a little shorter and lighter. Generally, its shape is quite edgier (the FP5 has curved sides).
Regarding the battery, accessing and especially removing it from the device is a quicker and simpler thing on the FP5 (it takes a total of seven screws and a press connector before you can take out the FP6 battery).
FP6 already comes with Android 15, FP5 is stuck with A13 and no indication when or even if Murena will provide over-the-air Upgrade for FP5 to more recent Android version.
If you flash the phone yourself, it’s not a show stopper as you can always grab the latest version, but then you need to unlock bootloader, which in return will stop a few applications to work correctly.
