Hello and thank you so much for all your questions and answers, which were very useful to me.
Being a complete beginner, I’m quite proud of having managed to install /e/ on my FP 2
However, there is one particular point I think I didn’t understand: to start by the result, (I think) I lost the TWRP backup…
I read very carefully (a few hundred times ) and followed very closely the instructions “Install /e/ on a Fairphone FP2 - “FP2” (beta)” (including the links regarding “Install TWRP” and “Backup and Restore with TWRP”).
I thought the backup created by TWRP somehow wasn’t affected by the formatting process (I imagined it was stored in some “magical” place, safe from formatting; for me that was the whole point of doing a backup with this particular tool…). OK, there is a warning ( Caution: Format Data will remove encryption as well as delete all files stored on the internal storage. Remember to take a backup first. Check Requirements section above.). But in that Requirements section, you are just advised to back up using TWRP; if you follow the instructions recommended in that section (which leads you to the link “Backup and Restore with TWRP”), you end up doing a backup which, I guess now, is stored in the internal storage… and which is then deleted by the formatting process, which obviously is absurd…
So in fact, I think that, if you follow those instructions, your TWRP backup is just useless, since it will later be deleted by the formatting process… Is this really so absurd or am I wrong?
I think the instructions should point out that the backup needs to be done not in the internal storage, but somewhere else, isn’t that right? (maybe on an external SD card? but not everyone has one, I don’t…).
It seems quite logical to me now, but I assumed that if that was the case, it would have been specified in the instructions…
Could anyone confirm this… or maybe tell me the good news that in reality I didn’t loose my backup?
To summarize my situation:
- I had a FP2 running on FP Open OS
- I installed and flashed TWRP (and I did rebooted into recovery the first time, to check the installation)
- I created a backup with TWRP, and checked it was completed
- I installed /e/, which is now working properly
- However, TWRP has now disappeared (when I get into recovery mode, it’s /e/ recovery that appears)
- No traces of my backup. I even installed and flashed TWRP again, but it cannot find any backup…
- So in fact, I guess, I won’t be able to go back to FP Open OS even if I needed…
(Well, at least I made a manual backup of my important files into my PC, and I’m changing to a new FP4 in a few days anyway. I just did all this because I wanted to try installing /e/ on my current old phone).
I’m sorry for this long message, but I hope it will be useful for others in the future.
Thanks in advance!
