Fairphone with /e/OS covered by TechAltar

I wonder, if new users are going to get attracted by his coverage

Really good video. I learned some stuff about about software I’ve not used myself.

Anyway I think his concerns about App Lounge and security were not material. Those mechanisms are emulated by MicroG which does not bypass them. It’s not down to the store app be it App Lounge or Aurora to provide those.

I wonder if the new /e/os search engine coming will be the European project of Ecosia + Qwant we hear about in this video.

Here is a link about “European Search Perspective”

That video actually inspired me to try e/os! I used the community guide to install it on a google pixel 6a. Which was at some points a bit technical but very detailed in every step which made it easy to follow.

So far i am loving the experience. it looks really nice and works great! One of the first things i tried was installing my banking app and seeing if it works (i read somewhere that could be an issue with custom ROMs). But it worked flawlessly, awesome!

I really wish this was the case for contactless payment with google wallet aswell, but hopefully this will come somewhere in the future

The App Lounge is simply amazing though. I have used the F-droid store before but this is so much better. The mix between google play app and FOSS apps makes for a really good experience!

But i was a bit surprised to find out that i could not delete some of the default apps (which i kind of expected for a custom ROM). But that is not a big deal.

Overall i love it!

In Android it’s best to disable apps rather then uninstall them. When an app is disabled there’s a possibility the system may still access its APIs, but that’s a good thing to keep the system from breaking. That can also can be considered a bad thing since you’re not truly disabling an app, you’re just telling the system it’s not available to the user.

In any case a lot of apps can not be disabled through the normal settings menus. There’s usually a system integrity reason for that, but they can be somewhat overcautious about it.

You can override a blocked disable with adb commands. And if you still can’t disable an app with adb, you can allow adb root debugging from developer options and issue the command “adb root” to get more unrestricted access.
