Folder name unexpectedly translated

In /e/OS’s default Mail app, the folder name “Archive” is inadvertently translated to “Archief” (its Dutch translation). It is fine and correct that text in UI features are translated, but not folder names. At the very least the way it happens here is inconsistent.

To reproduce (at least on my phone), set the global language to Dutch. Open “Mail”. Go to “Instellingen” (Settings), select your account, go to “Mappen” (Folders). Then set the “Archiefmap” (Archive folder) to “Archive”. (This is a folder name and literal string that should not be somehow translated.)

Then open a folder of your respective account, e.g. “Postvak-in” (Inbox), and open a message. Now click on the menu (⋮) and then “Opnieuw opslaan …”. It will show a menu item in addition to before setting the Archive folder. I expect it to be “Archive”. It is not. It is “Archief”. When you tick on this, the message is stored in the folder “Archief” (and if that does not exist, it will be created), consistent with the name of the menu item but inconsitent with the Archive folder “Archive” that I enabled in the settings.

The expected behaviour would be that if I set the Archive folder to “Archive”, I expect there to be a menu item that corresponds with saving to “Archive”, not “Archief”. The intermediate presentation of the menu item name should probably also be “Archive”, but this is of secondary relevance.

I have a Samsung S10 (beyond1lte) running /e/OS 3.5.

Is this the place to report bugs in Mail?

To report bugs you can create an issue in Gitlab. Mention the translation error and someone from the translators team can help correct it. You can also make the corrections, if you are interested in volunteering as a translator.

Thanks for suggestion!

There is no issue tracker related to the Mail project. Or should I go to a different project (could not find “translations”). Also, I think the problem is rather a software glitch than a wrong translation (or the way how translations are implemented).

I principle I’d like to contribute, but thinking twice because of the slow response to (the only) merge request.

Probably it makes more sense to test this in K-9 Mail (from which /e/OS’s Mail is forked), report/fix it there and wait until it trickles back into /e/OS’s Mail.

ah, a reminder to close that MR. Any devs are free to say no though.

Imo a translation fix has a higher chance. There’s a weblate instance handling translations, or you go through k9mail / thunderbird mail to land your change.

The problem appears to have disappeared. Now still the menu item is called Archief, but it is moved to Archive (as configured). This is fine.

I noticed this after an upgrade to /e/OS 3.6.
