Forgotten Password

Hi everyone,

I’m in a bit of a panic here and could really use some help. Here’s my situation:

  • Device: Fairphone 6 running /e/OS (Murena)

  • Issue: Changed my screen lock password, then forgot it. Now locked out.

  • Details:

    • Had multiple user profiles enabled

    • Had ADB debugging turned on before restart

    • Restarted the phone (I know, big mistake)

    • Now at 120-second lockout after too many failed attempts

    • Murena Workspace doesn’t have my passwords synced (checked wrong account or never set it up)

What I’ve tried:

  • tried several versions on what I think I did for the password

  • Checked for other user profiles on lock screen (none accessible)

  • Tried Murena Workspace login (no passwords saved there)

  • Find My Device won’t work (phone was rebooted and not unlocked)

Questions:

  1. Is there any way to recover the password or bypass the lock without factory reset?

  2. Since I had ADB debugging enabled before restart, can I still use ADB if I unlock once to re-authorize?

  3. Are there any Murena-specific recovery tools or methods I’m missing?

  4. If I have to go to a repair shop, what should I tell them about /e/OS?

I’m in Hong Kong and really don’t want to lose my passwords (some are only saved on this phone). Any advice would be greatly appreciated and sorry for the trouble

Thanks in advance,

Personally, not helpful but pragmatic, I must say there is always a harsh but fair question if you are a genuine phone owner with this sort of a burning question.

But maybe someone knows a procedure involving verifying that you are genuine to sort it out. Good luck, I wouldn’t hold my breath unfortunately…

Yeah, I know that its not clear that its actually my phone, I guess I could proof that I bought the phone :person_shrugging:

I am afraid Dariko that unless you have a revelation and remember the passcode, or had made a backup of your phone, you will have to say goodbye to all data as it is all encrypted and no way around it

I think there is no simple solution to this. you may try. use a professionalized service which 🇲🇦🇾🇧🇪 can do sth but will charge quite a amount of money for this, or your data is lost. I’m really sorry about this.

Moreover, don’t try to repeat wrong passwords too often. This will put additional time penalty. And moreover, I don’t know if Murena has a built in function to wipe the data after certain number of attempts, but I don’t think so.

Hi, I have a similar problem with my Fairphone 3. The most recent message is “You have got it wrong 13 times” and I realized I don’t know how many tries I get before — what happens? I’m locked out permanently and can’t try any more? All user data is wiped? — And I don’t know whether there will be a warning before I get there.
Is there some system reset that will let me back in? So, so grateful for any tips, thanks!!

PS: I know it was fairly simple: Up - Down - Over, left to right, (or maybe up - down - up - over?) but I made it a 4x4 patter and am not sure which row I started in, nor which of the ups and downs were vertical and which diagonal :frowning: But if I’m allowed several more tries, I’ll probably get it. It would be nice to know how many tries I get before the phone - what, turns into a brick? “You lose all your data” – but does that come with somehow regaining access, to this wiped phone?

Did you try to power down, wait for a spell and try again?

Does it restart start from zero?

YMMV if you had allowed any extra in Settings > Security > More security and privacy.

Check whether the mechanism seems to follow this guide https://smallusefultips.com/how-many-times-can-you-try-a-password-on-android/

Hi, thanks a ton. Now I have powered down, will do some other stuff and restart a bit later, see if the counter resets. In the meantime I’ll also maps out all the likely patterns I can think of, so I don’t repeat patterns when trying (like I did yesterday, in a semi-panic).
The linked article sounds a bit like I will be permitted lots of tries, but I assume it can still differ from one phone to the next. The article also has inconsistencies (sounds a bit AI-ish) so I don’t know if I can rely on any of the info, or if so, which. Still, I’m heartened!

Agreed.

I don’t have FP3 specific advice. This question is always Android version and device specific. There are stories of Samsung to lock up permanently.

By asking, does it reset to zero, helps to define what system FP3 uses.

By asking, whether the mechanism seems to follow helps to define if a timer is employed and can you guess whether you are moving into the more severe state?

This article demonstrates that recent phones are much less tolerant Android 17 slashes PIN guess attempts from 1,800 to just 20

OK, we’ll see if it resets. It did say the first few times, “x wrong guesses in y minutes” but the last, “13 wrong” message didn’t mention time.
I bought the phone in 2019 and the Android is 13, so maybe it’s a more tolerant setup :crossed_fingers: Thanks again for responding! It has a very calming effect

Power up, try again, “Wrong pattern 14th time, pls wait 30 seconds” :frowning: :crossed_fingers:

Mine’s a pattern, not a pin, but if I have 1800 guesses, I’m bound to get it one of these days! (I’m on 31 now.)

In the meantime I’ll need to power down again, take out the SIM card, and get some cheap replacement if such a thing exists (old used smart phone?) to use while I’m working on this. :frowning: (There are a couple of work-related things that my SIM accessibility is needed for.) I hope that doesn’t hamper this lovely pattern-seeking program I’m into now.
