FP4: Intermittent missing incoming SMS on physical SIM when eSIM is enabled

Hi,

I am seeing an intermittent SMS-receiving issue on a Fairphone 4 running /e/OS 4.0.

Setup:

  • physical SIM in slot 1
  • eSIM in slot 2
  • mobile data on the eSIM
  • /e/OS build: 4.0-a14-20260610633982-official-FP4

With both SIMs enabled, some incoming SMS to the physical SIM in slot 1 do not arrive. I noticed this especially with OTP/login codes and voicemail notifications, although the behaviour is intermittent: some test SMS to SIM 1 still arrive normally.

SMS sent to the eSIM in slot 2 arrive normally while both SIMs are enabled.

After disabling the eSIM and toggling airplane mode, all previously missing SMS for the physical SIM arrive immediately. Re-enabling the eSIM again breaks SMS receiption on the physical SIM.

Has anyone seen a similar issue on FP4 with /e/OS 4.0? Could a maintainer advise whether this should be opened as a GitLab issue?

You might check some recent threads with hashtag esim. This case has the asserted issue that eSIM fails when pysical SIM is present (and reverse) No connection to mobile network possible and three Gitlab issues were raised there.

Speculation, maybe some eSIM would rely on some SIM manager app that is Google dependent.

It sounds a bit like my issue (that @aibd linked). Altjough, in my case mostly the mobile data was affected.
SMS and calls work for me if I turn off WiFi calling and activate 4G calling.

Have you played around with these settings?

As @aibd suggested in my thread, I used *#*#INFO#*#* (or *#*#4636#*#*) to check the phone number and IMS registration.
If “phone information” did not show the phone number there, SMS and calls were not working for me

TL;DR: After switching the provider for the physical SIM and receiving a new SIM card, the issue has disappeared. It now seems likely that this was provider- or SIM-related rather than an /e/OS or FP4 issue. Sorry for the noise.

In retrospect, it was probably a coincidence that the issue started shortly after I upgraded to /e/OS 4.0, which led me in the wrong direction.

For completeness, I had already performed the suggested checks before posting, and repeated them after the replies here. However, the results varied and were not reproducible, which made me suspect that another factor was involved.

Since changing provider/SIM, incoming SMS have been working reliably. Thank you for your help, @aibd and @Erim!
