FP4 Timed display switched off causes shutdown

A friend of mine found out that her FP4 shutdowns are correlated with the display switch-off timing.

Since quite long she observed “spontanuous” shutdowns but couldn’t find a reason. Now she hears long podcasts more often and whenever the time comes for the display to switch off, the entire FP shuts down. Very annoying.

Currently the FP4 runs with 4.3. But the bug probably is older.

Does anyone has the same problem? Or a solution?

When I had heard an audio stream and the phone switched off the display, the stream stopped playing. The reason were revoked background permissions for the streaming app. Maybe another app could react with a critical failure causing the phone to shut down?

Interesting idea. But how to check?

Actually, when she first told me I thought that only the stream stops, as in your case. But it’s really the entire phone that shuts down. Even in long phone calls.

I have the same problem.
Since my English isn’t very good, I read your posts using a translator and also try to translate my sentences with DeepL.

The “Auto-Lock” feature causes not only the screen to turn off, but the entire operating system to shut down. If I set this feature to 5 minutes, the operating system shuts down after 5 minutes. If I set it to 30 minutes, the operating system shuts down after 30 minutes, and I have to restart it every time by entering my PIN.

This has been happening to me for a while now, but I’ve only just realized the connection to the screen timeout. Is there any way I can disable the automatic screen timeout?

This whole thing is really very annoying. It’s impossible to listen to anything in peace—for example, a 45-minute video or an audio recording. I have to constantly tap the screen with my finger to keep the device from turning off.

The timeout can be extended to 30 minutes (max) in Settings > Display.

Within the “Pull down” Quick settings, is Caffeine. Tap this to keep awake, max here is infinity.

Thanks for the tip!

But I’d like a way to do this without having to reconfigure it every time I turn on my phone. I only turn the phone on and then off again when I’m using it—if only to save battery life. And the numbers and symbols in this “Caffeine” quick setting are so small and lack contrast that, as a visually impaired person, I can barely make them out. Still, it’ll help, for example, during phone calls, so I don’t get kicked off the call because, depending on the display settings, the entire operating system shuts down.

The question that still remains is why the entire operating system shuts down for me, instead of just the display turning off when “Display turns off automatically” is enabled. By the way, it’s exactly the same on my Fairphone 5.
Is it like that for everyone?

No it does not work like that for everybody. On my FP4 with /e/ OS 4.3, I have what I would consider the expected functionality: timeout shuts down the display and locks the phone, but of course opened apps retain their state, background downloads continue etc. Long running tasks survive this, like Antennapod playing a podcast or Firefox playing a video (this one obviously even overrides the screen shutdown).

That’s exactly where the problem is for me—_everything_ shuts down completely, and I have to go through the restart process every time.

But for now, I can fix it with “Caffeine.” Thanks for this solution!

I have the exact same problem and I opened an /e/OS bug report for it.

I also opened a ticket with Fairphone because I am absolutely not amused how a clearly untested operating system release gets pushed upon us, rendering my phone completely useless.

People cannot even call me now and I depend in this phone to receive medicine.

I hope developers will act quickly on this. Upvoting the bug report helps!

Also, thanks for the Caffeine option in the instant menu.
