FP6 A16 4.1.1 Backup in Murena Cloud Problem

Hello,

Two days ago, I updated my Murena FP6 (non-rooted) to the official version 4.1.1 A16.
Now I want to set up the available backup feature for the first time.
I managed to get it working in principle, but the problem is that my current Murena cloud storage is only 1 GB in size.
The backup process starts, but the 1 GB runs out halfway through, so it never completes.

I have my own Nextcloud instance available; I’ve set up a WebDAV account and configured a mount point for it.
However, only the Murena cloud is available in the backup configuration window, and I cannot change this setting.

Alternatively, it would make sense to be able to exclude specific apps from the backup—apps you don’t actually want to back up.
“Magic Earth” is a good example here; who needs a backup for that?
It would also be much more elegant to back up just the list of apps rather than the apps themselves.
After all, when performing a fresh install, you simply reinstall the apps from the App Lounge, right?
If you only backed up emails, contacts, the app list, etc., 1 GB would certainly be more than enough.

I sync my photos using Proton Drive.

How do other users handle this?**

Similar problem here. I’ve been using e/OS with a custom Nextcloud server, and until now, it worked well. But it looks like the backups app is the first to use a Murena-specific API instead of the generic Nextcloud API, so I can’t get it to work.

On 4.1.1 redmi note 9, i don’t undestand if it’s part of the bug but when i want to configure backup destination, the options are local, davx, nextcloud.

Same here, the backup is unusable for me as is on FP5. (not enough space with app backup).
I don’t have any other Cloud instance though so i was hoping the 1go would be enough.

Came here to raise this exact point. It appears to be backing up all the apps which just nukes the storage space. Can we just sync app config or similar? (Is that possible?)

Android’s adb backup “from years ago” became problematic, I hope I provided the best link to show the progress of the workaround(s) used there. This project is currently updated but untested by myself for a while.

I have more then 1 TB on Murena Cloud, but my Vault is only showing 1 GB storage space….

Is this inteded to be that way?

I would love to know if this limitation (not being able to backup my phone to anything but the Murena cloud) is considered a bug or not. This isn’t clear at this point, while if it is by policy, it is a showstopper for me.

I have installed a non-Google OS on my phone to stop depending on services I do not control, and the backup feature was one of those that I validated before choosing /e/os (the other custom os I tried also used seedvault). You have now practically removed it for 2 iterations and my phone cannot be backed up (nor restored, for that matter) anymore.

Does Murena intend to reintroduce seedvault as a “cross-custom-android” backup solution (I don’t care if it’s hidden behind an “advanced” toggle, which is reasonable) ? Does Murena intend to offer another self-hosted full-featured OTA backup option ? Or am I required to host my backup on Murena’s servers when running /e/os ? I need to know.

Week 33, Development and Testing Updates

Seedvault should be back by v4.3. The team would be adding it as one of the options in the Backup screen. The ability to add other backup options on the same screen is also being considered.

By switching to version 4.3, I was able to set up data backup on webdav into a separate Nexctloud, perfect.

As mentioned, I can now set up backups on Nextcloud.
It works flawlessly, though I haven’t been able to test the restore process yet.

What I didn’t like is, that it takes a very long time—probably because there are so many folders and subfolders being backed up, totaling over 8.3 GB.
Whether via Wi-Fi or cellular data, it takes a long time.

I don’t know if the second backup—where perhaps only changed data is backed up—will be faster.

But I don’t like, that a cloud folder with over 8 GB of data has to be either constantly rewritten or have only changes synchronized.

I’ve now looked into other options in the backup feature.
Unfortunately, there’s no native way to back up to a local SMB share.

I’ve now set up the backup to a local folder on my phone.
This works quite quickly, since there’s more throughput here.

I’ve also set up the “FolderSync” app.
This app syncs this local backup folder to a local SMB share every night, which is also very fast.

During the first sync to the SMB share, 8.3 GB—consisting of 4,762 files and 258 folders—was transferred; this took 17 minutes.
FolderSync uses “rsync” logic, so only changed data is transferred.

The second sync, a few minutes later, took only 10 seconds—after all, no files had been changed.

I was already using Foldersync; I also use it to sync my local WhatsApp backup to the SMB share.
I no longer wanted to set up the usual backup to a Google Drive account.

I no longer have a Google account logged in on my FP6.

(Android Auto with Google Maps also works without a logged-in Google account.)

As another solution, you could, for example, connect a USB flash drive to a Fritzbox and share it as an SMB share on the local network.

What do you see if you choose “seedvault backup”?

Please take a look at my first screenshot.
Right at the top is the spot where you can select the backup location again.
