Galaxy S9 security/Android 12

Greetings!

My S9 currently runs the latest official /e/ firmware based on Android 12. However, Android 12 has been sunset by AOSP and it’s unlikely to get the full set of security patches. Are there any plans to ship an official image for this phone based on a newer release of Android?

Do I have to install the unsupported community image if I want security updates?

the /e/ “official” android 12 (SnowCone) branch is still safelly “maintained”
when in “community” branch, android 12 was dropped since july 2025 with :

  • e-3.0.4-s-20250711508337-community-starlte.zip

since October 2024, /e/ “community” branch is based on latest Lineage “official” branch, Current version is android 13 based :

  • e-3.7.2-t-20260423612682-community-starlte.zip

the case of the (starlte) is particular because there is nomore Lineage “offical” support

so to upgrade /e/, the device and kernel trees have to be patched by the e.foundation, thanks to a big contribution of the Murena team inspired from the work of others unofficial lineage forks.

For those who cannot wait, /e/ “unofficial” based on Lineage “unofficial” is already available, thanks to @ronnz98

Thanks for clarifying. Made my day!

Hey @piero, do you happen to know if anyone is working on modernizing the kernel for the S9? (It’s still on 4.9). I’ve been looking to get involved.

@Manoj should be able to direct you to concerned person.

Just track back to the first post of ronnz98’s, in this case, WIP thread to find sources and who is currently involved. In this case https://xdaforums.com/t/rom-s9-s9-note9-unofficial-lineageos-23-2-06-05-2026.4763471/.
