GCAM apps are broken with /e/OS 2.2

Dear @Manoj,

As already mentioned in the Feedback for v2.2 thread (see here and here), the GCAM apps are broken after upgrading /e/OS to v2.2 on my Fairphone 4.

The GCAM app starts, but it only shows a black screen:

Some more information:

  • Fairphone’s stock camera works fine.
  • OpenCamera works fine.
  • The device is not rooted.
  • GCAM app ID org.codeaurora.snapcam, version 9.2.113.604778888.19, downloaded from here

The user @s.marwitz faces the same issue.

I’ve created this dedicated topic to hopefully become less cluttered/mixed with other issues.

I appreciate your help!

You might want to add the specific version of GCam you are on. I am using a very old version (Nikita NGCam_8.2.300-v1.8) that is not affected by this problem on my Fairphone 3+ on /e/OS-dev v2.2

I think it has to do with the camera changes FP4 and FP5 got.

But I would say raise an issue and wait…

Where would you raise an issue? In the /e/OS GitLab repo?

All issues are raised In the gitlab

The update also broke: com.example.barcodescanner from F-Droid

com.google.zxing.client.android from F-Droid still works for me.
In-built QR code scanner in Firefox, too.

I decided to jump on this already existing FP5 issue instead of filing a new one

Still not working in 2.3. Very dissappointing!

I had a very similar issue until I re-enabled microg, which I had deactivated. I have a Fairphone 3+ and I’m also using an old gcam port by Nikita.

until I re-enabled microg

@berenice: how can one enable/disable microg?

@mu88 You go to Settings → Apps → See all apps → App info → Disable (middle option)

Tested both on v2.2 and v2.3 of /e/OS, but unfortunately it didn’t fix the issue :sleepy:

I have (temporarily) a Fairphone 3 and Fairphone 4 now. I love photography and have been using Gcam on my FP3 since I installed e/os. (now at version 2.4.1). It is wokring fine, although my phone is getting a bit slow in processing.

This week I got my Fairphone 4, so I have a fresh install of e/os 2.4.1 (official) on this phone.

Whatever Gcam version I try, only the video and panorama mode work. Night/camera/portrait view just give me a black screen with the buttons.

I tried enabling and disabling de FP camera app itself in the settings (and rebooted after enabling and disabling). I assume it’s the same problem as described here and also reported at Gcam stopped working after updating to 2.1, too many and broken cameras in Open Camera (#8123) · Issues · e / Backlog · GitLab (I also have the ugly distortion on the right side when I shoot in panorama mode). What I don’t understand, is the reason it was closed

I read that someone with a FP5 had it working again since e/os 2.4, but it’s not the case for me.

Also read this topic, but it got a bit too technical for me. FP4 - gcam-port - #290 by noodlejetski - The Products - Fairphone Community Forum Plus it’s information from last year and earlier.

Is there someone with an FP and a recent version of e/os and working Gcam? Could you tell which Gcam you use and what settings you have used to perhaps activate the cams?
I have now installed the downloaded APK, so I guess it’s using the camera2 api. Does it make a difference to have it installed as a system app? And is there a way to do that if my phone is not rooted?

thanks!

AFAIK there is no news from the /e/OS developer team yet :pensive:

The issue you found in the backlog was closed in favor of RAW format type does not work in version 2.1 /e/OS on FP5 (#8075) · Issues · e / Backlog · GitLab, so feel free to raise your need for this app there, too, so that the necessity for a fix becomes more traction.

Maybe @Manoj can friendly ask the dev team whether they could provide an update. But beside that there is not much you can do at the moment

Thanks. Is it still not working for you as well? I saw the topic about missing RAW support, and indeed also in other camera apps the camera does not work if I choose to shoot in RAW.

I will post on gitlab!

Exactly, it’s not working for me for months, too
