Getting Duolingo speaking lessons working

Hello! I spotted some older threads about getting the mic working for speaking lessons in Duolingo working. The suggestions in there either didn’t work, or didn’t have enough info for me to figure it out, but after a bit more searching I found a found an article which explains all the steps for what you need to do:

I’ve replicated the advice here just in case that website disappears:

  1. Give Duolingo Microphone permissions
  2. Install Google Speech Recognition & Synthesis from the App Lounge
  3. Navigate to Settings > System > Languages > Voice Input, and set Speech Recognition & Synthesis as your voice input provider
  4. Click the config cogwheel next to Voice Input.
  5. Download the languages you want to use, including your native language, as an offline language
  6. Go the Settings > Apps, and find Google Speech Recognition & Synthesis and grant it the Microphone permission while using the app.
  7. Reboot your phone.

Fingers crossed your lessons work now!

Btw, if for someone reason you can’t get this to work and want to uninstall Google Speech Recognition & Synthesis, you have to do it from Settings → Apps as it doesn’t create a launcher icon and there is no option for it in the App Lounge.

This worked for my Fairphone6 with the Official Murena install, upgraded to v4 today.

Did you tried to install wisper ? A speech to text input powerrd by ia but totally offline.

It seems Whisper (installed from the app lounge open source tab) and configured in the same way as above does work! It is markedly slower though!

I can’t confirm if it’s not cheating on my behalf though as Duo seems to think my spoken French is better…

Whisper+ doesn’t seem to work.
