I just bought a pre-installed Gigaset GS290.
It has been kind of nightmareish to get it up and running. I managed to solve most problems but now I can not send or receive MMS. It can send and receive SMS, but not with photos attached.
I have searched the internet and this forum, but can not find any help.
Tried many basic things, like checking if roaming is on and all that. I even found APN settings and copied them from the old phone. But keep in mind that I have no idea what I am doing.
Different from most of you here I am not a techie and just want to have a google-free phone, I actually really dislike fiddling with mobiles. Still, I try to get it to run.
Any ideas, why does it not send and receive MMS?
It is used in Sweden with Telenor provider.
By the way, I bought another GS290 last year for an employee. It can not send MMS either.
I may have solved it. It was difficult, took me a whole day.
Although the old Samsung S5 mobile worked when I took the SIM from it and installed in the new Gigaset GS290, it did not work in the Gigaset.
I had no idea what APN settings was. Have never needed them before. Tried all sorts of trouble shooting before that but to no avail. I lastly tried to modify the APN settings, not really knowing what I did. But it started working! So for you non-tech users out there, maybe this is the solution.
I found on my providers page a set of settings (Telenor SE). They are for Samsung and Sony only. Not sure why or if it matters. Desperately I tried the Samsung settings, and it seemed to work.
For no particular reason other than “it felt right” I did not write in the section APN-type: mms, like they said, instead I wrote APN-type: default, supl, mms. I have no idea what it means (but default and supl was there before I modified it and the comma is of course just a separator).
Had a vague idea that it would maybe work and assuming that this APN setting will have to work for all mobile communications, not only MMS. Because I could only chose one APN (on the forum some seem to have suggested to have two, one for MMS and one for ‘I don’t know what’). It seems you can define several, but only one active at one time. I tried to define a new one but it disappeared, so I modified the old instead (before that writing down on paper the old settings). I can’t believe it but it works!
If you are in Sweden and use Telenor you can check the settings here:
But it will probably not be useful for any else of you.
Why the APN settings worked on one phone but not on another is a mystery. I even tried the exact same settings but no. Still, I am glad that it works now.
