GMX Mail - IMAP, authentication fails, even though username and password are correct

Hello everyone,

I’ve been using a Fairphone 6 and an e os 3.0.4 for a few days. Therefore, I lack the experience of whether there have been problems before.

The problem is the following: The pre-installed Mail app and K9-Mail cannot establish a connection to GMX. It is reported every time that there is an authentication error. I can safely say that the username and password are correct.

When I start the app, I take over the configuration (IMAP) that is suggested to me, because it works on my Shiftphone. Furthermore, I imported a (on the Shiftphone) working configuration. Unfortunately, a connection is not possible with it either. My search in this forum so far has not yet led me to a solution.

Regards fmm

Regain your privacy! Adopt /e/OS the deGoogled mobile OS and online servicesphone

did you use the GMX app prior? 3rd party clients would need IMAP enabled - POP3/IMAP einschalten

Edit: uh, they do/did have an outage - https://allestörungen.de/stoerung/gmx/ - so it was probably up to that?

Hi tcecyk,

the problem started yesterday evening and could not be fixed. Unfortunately, this information was missing in my description. Nevertheless, it was a good hint from you

edit: I have avoided the GMX app so far.

and IMAP works from any other client on your devices, while IMAP from the /e/OS Mail client will not?

That is the problem.

any chance you have hide-my-ip activated? I can imagine some services not liking Tor

The setting under ‘advanced privacy’ is ‘real IP address: unprotected’

  • the behaviour is the same, home wifi vs mobile network?
  • can you go into the detailed gmx account settings in Mail: Sandwich Menu → Accounts → gmx → Fetching mail → incoming Server (almost at the bottom) and compare to Serverdaten für IMAP und SMTP ?

So, now it works and unfortunately I don’t know why. I reset the phone and installed the ‘K9-Mail’ app first. Maybe the app access was blocked when I tried it too often and didn’t have access with a working app (other phone) in between…

Thanks for the support!

My Problem is similar: I used to use the /e/OS Mail-App for my GMX Account and everything worked fine until i tried the /e/OS built-in “hide-my-IP” feature. Since then i just see the authentification error evertime i want to imap-connect to GMX. Already deleted the account from the Mail-App and tried to set-up new but it still does not want to work.
Any ideas for a solution?

if your credentials work on the web-login but not in the mail-client and you think it’s due to having used Tor once to connect, file a GMX support ticket the Tor connection was legitimate and to re-enable IMAP/SMTP again.

Mail providers get lots of credential stuffing attacks, not the least from Tor-exit nodes.
