Google Pixel 3a XL - Displaying charging info on lock screen

Hi,

I just did a fresh install of /e/OS on my Google Pixel 3a XL, and I’m pretty happy with it so far, but there is one thing that annoys me: when I charge it using the USB cable, there is no indication on the lock screen that shows that it’s actually charging (sometimes the USB cable is not reliable and although it is plugged in, the phone doesn’t charge), and there is no information about the battery percentage, or, more exactly there is one, but it’s written in small font at the bottom of the screen making it hard to read when you’re a bit far away from your phone.

So I’m looking for a way to display such information in the lock screen when the device is charging.
I tried installing few apps but they all turned to be pretty bad, e.g. not displaying the correct information, or not displaying all the time (sometime when the screen turned off there’s no info displayed).

  • Do you know a way to show such information on the lock screen?

  • Or any good app to recommend to do that?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Do you have AOD on your device?

If you activate that you can maybe opt for HolyLight I think it if from F-Droid

Hi tOm8

Glad you managed to find a suitable phone. Was it new? You said something about the cable not being reliable… maybe the connector on the phone isn’t reliable.
I advise you to use wireless charging if you can as that protects your phone’s USB connector… (sorry your phone doesn’t have wireless charging… I thought it has as my Pixel 3 XL does).
I don’t know of any easy way to display the charging status, but I’ll investigate.

Good luck!

I’ve tried a few apps but none seemed OK for what you want. Maybe Battery charging animation would be what you want, however it requires a lot of permissions so I did not try it.
The font battery indicator on locked screen is dependent on the font size and display size so maybe you can increase them a bit. Also if you want to have all the time the lock screen you can enable ambient display (and then set it to always on of wake up on gestures).
That’s all I can help you with this. I have LED on almost all my phones that change the color depending on the status of charge so I don’t use any battery indicator nor do I use ambient display.
Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for your answer.
I tried installing Holey Light from GitHub, but it needs permissions I can’t grant.
There’s a prompt to grant Holey Light access to notifications but when I want to do so, I have a “Restricted setting” error saying: “For your security, this setting is currently unavailable”. It looks like this restriction is built in /e/OS, and I guess there’s a good reason behind that, but this is too bad, as this app seemed to fix my issue :frowning:
On the other hand, this app requires A LOT of permissions, which makes sense as it’s intended to show notifications when the screen is off, so it makes sense to ask for permissions to see notifications etc … but it’s a bit scary at the same time.

Is there a way to circumvent this restriction?

Thanks.
Yes it’s new.
Actually my issue wityh the phone not being detected didn’t come from the USB cable, but from missing ADB Windows drivers. It’s been fixed easily thanks from the help of some people on this forum

Thanks @Cooler , I’ve tried this app but I didn’t like it. I tried few others as well, so not sure to remember what I didn’t like with this one, but so far as I remember, it was too distracting and not displaying the information I was after so I uninstalled it.
But thanks for the advice anyway.

Atleast you know the code behind it, so sure the choice is yours to trust.

I recently also got an issue with not beeing able to grant, might bemthe same. Thought it is the app or by device. Thx for mentioning it.

Hi again. Well I understood that it doesn’t charge properly/sometimes… there was no mention that you are trying to charge it form a USB port of a computer… Even if it’s not detected it should still be charging from a USB port of a computer/laptop if there is no issue with the cable or the USB connector on the phone… BTW charging from the USB port of a computer is a good idea since it is a slow charge (~0.5 A) so you prolong the life of the battery.
I use wireless charging (in spite of lower energy efficiency) as I use my phones quite a lot while at work so plugging/unplugging the phone several times a day would be bad for he USB connector on the phone and the cable.
One of the very few apps that i (rarely) use and that I find useful is DevCheck; it provides a lot of information about the phone, amongst them rate of charge/discharge in mA.

Thanks @Cooler , DevCheck looks pretty amazing but it’s not exactly what I’m looking for.
Too bad the ‘Holey Light’ app needs extra permission that /e/OS can’t seem to grant, as it was the perfect app for me :frowning:

I will try looking for another similar.
