Google Pixel 4a 5G (bramble) : A13 to A16?

Hi,

I need help because I am unable to know if an Android upgrade from A13 to A16 is possible on my bramble device

I read the HOWTO but I’m lost and I can’t even answer the first questions…

Current /e/OS version : 3.0.4-t community (A13)

Thanks for any help

So you check here Factory Images for Nexus and Pixel Devices  |  Google Play services  |  Google for Developers and we see that Stock development continued to Android 14.

14.0.0 (UP1A.231105.001.B2, Feb 2024)

Double check the install page Install /e/OS on a Google Pixel 4a 5G - “bramble” says

Before following these instructions please ensure that the device is on the latest Android 14 firmware.

So you are going to be involved in an Android version upgrade, where even though your Android 13(T) build has a vendor partition, this will be required to be upgraded to a14.

Avoiding data loss cannot be certain. So be sure to backup fully before proceeding.

Be sure to read on in the guide but you can reduce overall risks by only upgrade to a14 this time. Upgrade later to a15 you will be covered by “already latest is on the phone”.

For Q4 you are going to Upgrade LineageOS on bramble | LineageOS Wiki but this info is ahead of your current a13 → a14 upgade so cannot be relied upon.

For any upgrade a clean install will always ensure a fresh start and you could go to a15 or a16 as you prefer.

It’s possible I did it to my bramble. I was at a15 and did a fresh install to a16.
You can jump from A13 right to A16. Might as well wait until the 11th and do a fresh install of eOSv4.

Edit: Your coming from Android so be at the latest A14 as in the instructions as @aibd says.
I thought you were already running eOS.

I’m sorry, I must be stupid but I am really confused with your answers and can’t understand what I can or can not do.

My bramble device currently runs under eOS 3.0.4-t community (last version on A13 and doesn’t get any OTA updates anymore). So I want to upgrade to eOS 3.7.3-a16.

Since I can’t get if I can do this upgrade without data loss, I guess I will save all my data and do a fresh new eOS install

So you are going to be involved in an Android version upgrade, where even though your Android 13(T) build has a vendor partition, this will be required to be upgraded to a14.

How do I achieve that upgrade to A14 ?

Do I have to install Google A14 stock OS before re-installing /e/OS ?

(I am currently under /e/OS 3.0.4-t community A13)

So the underlying meaning of this is that we do not know what happened in the ongoing firmware development for regular Android Pixels (during a13 → a14 Stock).

Thus a13 firmware (which you have in e/OS 3.0.4-t community) is not the recommended base for a14.

People with actual experience of the device like @Jets will know from experience what you can get away with.

Following the path in my first post, yes you would install that latest Android 14 Stock which I quoted. You can use Android Flash tool mentioned in the Google page.

I just kept my device up to date even though I was not using it, so I stepped through all versions A13,14,15,16.

To be safe I would move to A14 eOS (final version) then jump right to A16 current version (v4.0).

Please share evidence of /e/ builds include needed firmware partitions.

@piero

I don’t quite follow the above comment. Are you saying they cannot got from eOS A13 to eOS A14?

Sorry, I have no access to my PC to extract the builds myself.

So, I did install A14 stock image via Google flash tool.

Then I did a fresh install of eOS 4-a16 following the bramble tutorial

I had to try it twice but everything went well in the end

Everything is OK now, thank you very much for your help !
