when I have a device with an GSI on /e/ OS version 1.4 do I have to bring 1.5 on the device before I install 1.6? Or can I install directly 1.6.
Due to the fact that it is a GSI I think I can go directly to 1.6., am I right?

Yes, you can skip versions. Each build is a complete installation. Same goes for the supported devices.
